I took a seat at one of the food court tables in the mall. "Alright my feet hurt, I can't take it any longer. I'm tired." I looked down at the wedges I was wearing. "How do you do it?"
Cece did a little dance in her high heeled boots to show how much energy she still had in her. "Years of practice." She said like it was the most obvious thing in the world. I rolled my eyes and got up ignoring the pain. Even though Cece and I were 'friends', like she said popularity is a contest, and I refused to lose to Cece. For the past week or so we've been having these competitions. They weren't even planned they just... happened. We went to a pumpkin patch and saw who could get the biggest pumpkin; she won. We had a sleepover at my house and saw who could stay up longer; I won😏. We even went to parties and counted up how many guys hit on us; a tie.
"I thought you were tired." She smiled mocking me in a I'm-better-than-you tone.
I fake smiled. "Sudden burst of energy I guess."
She squinted at me for a bit. "Well anyway, were going to look bomb AS FUCK, in these dresses for the Fall ball in a few weeks." She held up her peach color dress.
"With just the right heels it'll be even better." I had gotten a sleek black dress with a tail in the back. A hundred dollars never looked so good! Finally she took a seat at the table, I sank in a chair too, thank god.
"So, what's the deal with you and this Alex kid.?"she said.
"I like Alex he's... realer than the guys I've dated before. I know he's a nerd but I can over look-" she started fake snoring. I rolled my eyes.
"Now who you should look into is that football player Tyler, I hear he likes you." She poked my arm. "And Carmen's out of the picture, this is your chance."
"He's a pretty cool friend I guess, but I don't think I like him that way."
"Well you should, dating an athlete boosts your popularity." She flipped her red hair out of her face.
"I thought our friendship 'boosts' popularity." And for the most part it had. Boys at school hollered at us as we walked down hallways at school, party goers couldn't help but just look, and even my friends Khari, Tiffany, and Aneika saw a little more pep in my step. For the most part they were ok with Cece and I's friendship as long as the got the 411 on all things secret about her. They really wanted something juicy and to be honest it was basically just too pretty girls battling for whose prettier.
"Trust me it is, were like the worse type of villians." She smiled.
"Oh yeah and what is that?" I raised a brow.
"We're the kind that can't be stopped." She winked.
I wasn't going to lie I liked the sound of that. Just then her phone chimed. She read it and practically fell out of her seat with joy, grabbing us the attention of a few concerned elderly women. "Ok, ok, ok listen, I got us a modeling gig. I kept it a surprise for some time now." She squeaked.
"What?"
"My family's photographer knows a few people from a small magazine company, so I sent in a few pics of us and he pulled a few strings, and we got it!"
"Wait, you have a family photographer?"
"Not the point."
"So you mean, we'd actually be on a magazine cover?" I couldn't believe it. I imagined myself on the cover of one of the magazines that the old ladies who's attention we stole was reading in the waiting room of an office or dentist.
"Yeah, you told me how you've wanted to model so I pulled a few strings and voilà. What do you say?"
"Well obviously I say, fuck yeah." I threw my hands up in a puff of excitement and surprise.
"Good cause there's no canceling now." She smiled. And we sat for a little while quietly, I could feel her stealing glances.
"What?" I asked.
"Its just that... have you always looked like that." She paused. "I mean your the top best looking girl in the school, maybe even in this town of Springfield."
"Why do you ask?"
"Well its just that I was... an ugly duckling you can say. And I dealt with a lot to look the way I do. I lost the weight and dropped the glasses and put a hold on my reading." I looked at her to find the meaning of this joke, after realizing she was serious I started to see the real Cece Wynn.
"Actually no I did glow up a lot, I ditched the glasses, put a lil color to this hair and started buying heels." I smiled. She smiled back.
"Its nice to know that I'm not the only pretty girl with an ugly past." She said.
"Sure we hide pictures of those little girls in the back of our phone galleries, but they've made us who we are."
She raised an imaginary wine glass. "To: glowing up." I giggled and made a clink sound to our imaginary glasses hitting each others.
"To: glowing up." I smiled. It was nice to see Cece like this it was like watching a demon grow a halo, a turtle lose its shell, or...
... Cece being human.
