I at lunch, as always, I sat alone, in my favorite rocking chair across from Ms. Avalon.
"I saw you getting along with that blonde boy. He might adopt you."
"Maybe, but I just can't leave like that! Of course I want to rub it in Jessica's deformed and plastic face but I don't want to leave you. Not now. You're like my mom." I knew I had a nice time with Niall. In fact, the best time with a peer.
"And your like my daughter. That's why I opened the orphanage.
M-M-My husband was a labor abuser. He left me when we realized I couldn't have kids... So I wanted to help other kids find homes and raise them; Like you." Her lower lip quivered.
"Give or take 5 years in, you showed up on the doorstep in a cool, breezy afternoon. I remember that day like it was hours ago. It was a cozy feel outside, but your fluffy cheeks were so cold, you had little tears in your eyes. Aww.." She smiled. Her eyes shimmered making a drop of liquid fall. "Your eyes were the first thing I became attached to; because you have these intense, creamy brown eyes that I loved to flaunt, all over here in New York. You always had soft, silk like hair and skin because I payed loads of attention to it. I enjoyed smoothing and playing with both until you fell asleep. You were the cutest thing..but you grew up to become this smart, nice, BEAUTIFUL young girl."
"I'm not beautiful." I said. I've always doubted that.
"You're right. You're gorgeous, stunning, radiant, and lovely!" I laughed.
"Thanks." Ergh, I don't like being complimented.
*********
That night, same as always, I slept stiffly. Straight as an arrow, flat as a flounder.
I brushed my hands lightly on the warm, handmade blanket Ms. Avalon made me when I was a child. I sure would missed her if I was going to get adopted. Today, after Open House, I didn't say a word; I didn't stop Jessica from going on and on about her getting adopted by Niall. My money's on the rich family I had an encounter with. But I shut my brain off, for my self-scheduled curfew was past by an hour and a half. I let one tear leave my eye before I shut it; Not crying for a while, your eyes leak any chance they get right?
Right. I mean I hope. My intelligence and book smarts aren't going to solve my problems. My logic and street smarts are going to; which I have little to none of. Of course that's my opinion. I'm not that amazing.
Jessica hauled her bony body into my room. "Ok, let's get this straight, NOW."
"Go away, I'm in slumber."
"Get up!" She whispered/yelled.
"I will when my body tells me to. Which for your info, it's in the morning."
"Whatever; I'm just here to say that Niall's ALL MINE-"
"OH SHUT UP! You keep pestering everyone with this, 'Niall's mine' crap and it's time to drop it! Ok, I don't really give a damn if he decides to pick you, but that isn't something that EVERYONE cares about! Go back to your ditch!" I forcefully crammed this information into her minuscule vessel of hers called a brain. "I don't care-I just don't. Goodnight." -2∞+↑
