"Done!", I yell jumping from my seat at the table.
"Wait. Where are you running off to?", Mom asks.
"I'm going to play outside", I tell her. I have to think of a better excuse because I know, one of these days, they're going to ask what I do outside for so long. I can't tell them about Hailey.
I run to the spot we met in originally and plop down, panting. "Kaidee!", Hailey yells as she approaches.
"I'm here! Shh!", I help her through the bushes.
"I brought snacks", she pours out dozens of snacks from her bag. "I also brought pictures of the stores and town. I drew them so they might not be very good. I wanted you to be able to see it though. I didn't want to bring my HDS here because then my mothers could find me."
"You can be tracked through your HDS?"
"Yes. I know because they used it the first time I ran away."
"Hmm. Maybe they were worried? Maybe they're worried right now."
"No. They're not home.", she pulls me into an embrace and buries her head in my neck.
I put a hand on her head to comfort her. She's always sad like this. She puts up a front of being happy though.
"You smell so nice!", she exclaims before sitting up.
"Haha thank you.", I pull her head back down to my neck, "How was school?"
"They pushed me off the playground castle", she sobs, "I hurt my ankle."
"Let me see", she lifted her pant leg revealing a purple bruise. Something about that makes me angry. Really angry. How dare they hurt my friend.
"Can you wait right here for a sec? I need to get some bandages."
"No!", she holds on tighter, "Don't leave me."
I run my hands through her hair. "Okay. I won't leave."
"A-anyways here!", she shyly hands me the drawings.
"Aaah! It looks so cool! Thanks Hailey!", I look over the bright, vibrant colors. "They really are beautiful...", I say to myself, longing to jump into them.
"You like them?"
"Like? I love them! I'm definitely going to hang them up in my roo-", I snap my mouth shut.
"Room? What do you mean?"
"Nothing I-"
"Kaideen if we're going to be best friends we can't keep secrets. I tell you everything so you have to do the same."
I bite my lip, "Okay...but you can't tell anyone. If you do we'll never meet again!"
She looks hurt for a moment, "I won't tell anyone. You can trust me."
"Okay. Okay okay. I don't live in the Pines' backyard. I live in their house. With them. I'm their son."
"Like, light?", she looks puzzled. I'd laugh but this is a really serious subject.
"No, not the sun in the sky. You know how everyone has a daughter?"
"Yeah"
"Well I'm the opposite."
"Huh?"
"Like...", I blush and point to my crotch, "Down here is different from what everyone else has."
"Oh like in history class?! The extinct? The uh man?"
"Yeah. I'm a man."
"No way!"
"Yes way!"
"But the books say that men are ugly and you're the most beautiful person I've ever seen!"
I stare at her in shock, "You...you think I'm beautiful?"
She looks away and tones her voice down to a mumble, "Yeah, of course I think you're beautiful. Have you seen yourself?"
I can't help but smile really big. I give her a hug. "Thanks! Hehe I think you're gorgeous! Like a storybook princess!"
She hugs me back and hides her face over my shoulder.
"Do you ever want to try getting out?"
"Of course I do but I can't."
"Sure you can!"
"No, I'm- I'm most likely going to get really big. And my shape will differ so I can't really leave."
"You're not big now. We could sneak out at night and I'll give you a tour! If anyone sees us I'll protect you!"
"Well... if you say that..."
"Then it's settled! We'll go tomorrow!"
-------------------------------------------------------------
"Actually we can't go today.", Hailey, says as I apply a bandage to her knee. Which she scraped when the girls from her school pushed her down.
"What? Why?"
"The girls will be out tonight. And um...", she pauses and starts fidgeting.
"What is it?"
"I did something bad..."
