I put on my skirt, tights, and a collared shirt. It's the uniform for this school, Hailey's school. She got in on a scholarship because she's really smart. I am about to finally join her on campus, it's a surprise.

"I'm ready!", I call out.

"Alright let's go", Mom says looking worried and fidgety.

"Calm down love, our baby will be fine.", Ma says, reassuring Mom.

They both took the morning off to bring me to school for the first day. They squeeze me really tight before leaving the school. Even though Mama was reassuring Mom, I know that she's worried too. They don't need to worry. I already have a friend here. I'm in Hailey's class too!

"Today we have a new student, class. Kaideen Pine. Be sure to be nice to her.", the teacher, Ms. Warsh, says.

"Kaidee?!", I spot Hailey as she jumps up and smile real big.

"Oh, you two know each other?"

"Yeah, we're best friends!", I say still smiling really wide at Hailey's shocked face.

The shock slowly turns to a smile too.

"Then how about you girls sit together?"

"Th-thank you Ms. Warsh!", Hailey exclaims.

I sit next to Hailey, "What happened to your hair?", she whispers.

"I had to dye it a few days ago so that I look more like my mothers. Wh-what do you think?", I grab a strand of my now brunette hair and looked at it, nervously.

Hailey touches my hair, "So fluffy. So soft. I love it."

I smile again and at this point my cheeks are hurting but I can't help it, "Thanks Hailey."

Sitting next to Hailey in this new environment is going to be so exciting!
-----------------------------------------------------------

"Kaidee! Stop!", Hailey screams as she pulls at my arm.

I beat the shit out of them. In my arm I hold the leader's neck, ready to crush it.

"KAIDEEN!!", Hailey screams at the top of her lungs and I drop the girl like a sack of potatoes.

I wouldn't care if they had started bullying me but they were still bullying Hailey. I told them not to mess with my best friend. These are the thoughts running through my head as Hailey pulled me from behind the school and all the way home, in the pouring rain.

Hailey bangs on the front doors. I don't remember how we got here so fast. Rage is still coursing through me. The doors open and Mama answers.

"I'm sorry Mrs. Pine bu-", Mama pulls me from Hailey's grasp and hugs me close.

"Cass! Cass!! Our baby our baby she's-!!", Mama sobs and Mom runs over in her apron.

"Let me see her.", Mom looks over me and sighs in relief, "She just got into a fight. Go clean her up."

Hailey still stands outside in the rain. I see Mom talking to her as I'm pulled away.

--------------------------

Mama has the holomaids clean me up and the holonurses fix up my wounds. I now sit on my bed staring at the floor. "Kaideen.", Mama starts.

"Where's Hailey?"

"Mother's getting her cleaned up and giving her something to wear. She'll have dinner with us. After we call her mothers."

"Don't!", I jump up, suddenly fully aware of what's going on around me. I run past Mama down the hallway. "Hailey! Hai-!"

Mom catches me mid stride. "You're in big trouble young lady."

"But- arrgh! Where's Hailey? Don't call her mothers! Don't!"

Mom looks at me with disapproval and puts me down in silence. I glare at the floor.

"Kaideen."

I pout.

"Is this how I raised you?"

I feel tears sting my eyes as she looks down at me. I sniffle. "I'm sorry Mother. But those girls were bullying Hailey. She's my best friend. I want to protect her. In the end I just scared her."

Mom's expression softened, "Hailey is at the dinner table. I shall be calling her mothers and you will be apologizing to everyone tomorrow."

"Yes mother."

"Dismissed."

I walk past Mom to the dinner table where Hailey sits quietly but looks around full of excitement. Not fear?

"Hailey?"

She looks up, "Kaidee!", she jumps up and before I realize it, I'm in her embrace. "Kaidee I was so scared. I'm so glad nothing happened to you."

To me? If anything she should worry about the other girls. "My mothers are calling your home to notify your's."

"That's okay. Then they'll know I've been here and stop lecturing me. Your house is so nice!"

"Yeah. I guess."

Hailey appears to be fine now. Much less shaken then I am. Much less worried. Maybe it's because she's always been free. She knows of the ups and downs or the freed world. She knows the consequences of what I did. Which aren't that bad it seems. So I relax.
