"Do you... need help?", I ask the girl as I look her over. She has black hair and frosty blue eyes. She's fair-skinned like Mother.
"Um yes!", she wriggles, "Can you help me get through?"
I probably shouldn't help her get any further inside but my curiosity is getting the best of me. I want to ask her about the outside.
I reach in to feel for her hands but I can't reach them so I start breaking branches and tearing them out around her shoulder area.
"That's it! I'm getting through.", she wriggles again and pulls her hands out. "Ow ow ow ow! The sticks are stabbing me!"
I grab at her arms and yank her out. She lands on top of me and the force sucks all the air out. I wheeze.
"Oh my gosh are you okay? Sorry!", she gets up and I can breath again.
I cough a few times. After gaining my breathe I ask, "Who are you? What are you doing here?"
"I'm Hailey.", she puts out her hand and I just look at her, "Ahem uh, anyways, I came here to see the Pines. Since they don't have any children I wanted to become their child. But then I found you. What-"
I assume that 'Pine' is my mothers' alias, "Have you ever thought that maybe they don't have children because they don't want any?"
"Well...no.", she looks down at the ground sadly.
"What about your actual mothers? Wouldn't they be worried?"
"No. They wouldn't care. They don't care about me at all."
"Why do you think that?"
"Because I tell them that the girls at school bully me but they tell me to turn a blind eye. To act like it's okay.", she sniffs and I realize that she's about to cry, "I don't have any friends either. No one likes me."
"Don't cry Hailey. I'll be your friend, if you want. I'm Kaideen.", my heart pounds against my chest and I hope that she can't hear it. A real friend is something that I could only dream about before now.
"Really?"
"Yeah, if you want."
"Yay! We'll be the best of friends!", she envelops me into a hug.
I freeze. I'm not used to this sort of contact but then I hug her back. My first real friend.
"So what are you doing here?"
I bite my lip. I can't really tell her. "It's a secret. You can't tell anyone."
"I promise I won't tell."
"I live here."
"In the Pines' backyard?"
"...yeee...es. Yes I do."
"You don't go to school?"
"I can't leave. I'm not supposed to ever leave."
"So you've been here your whole life?"
"Yeah... I'm interested in what it's like out there."
"Oh well it's just a small town. There are stores and a-"
"What are stores like?"
"Well you buy things."
"Why?"
"Because you need them. Like food."
"So that's where food comes from."
"Kind of.", she laughs.
