Chapter 18: Secrets

"It can't be...", Mama whispers.

"I knew it!", Elian says, "Hurry up and come inside."

Mom and Mama look at each other strangely so I just walk inside. I mean why are they being so weird?

"Mom? Mama? Come on.", they haven't even stepped inside and I'm already embarrassed.

"You act like you really have a choice.", Elian says menacingly. Uh...what the hell?

"Right? You're already all dressed up and it's dinner time. Come."

Mom and Mama follow us inside.

"I'll help you serve the food. Mom says to Elian."

"Thank you.", Elian smiles and they go into the kitchen.

"Kaideen!", Julieta calls and glomps me, "I'm so glad you could make it!"

"Haha yeah. Me too.", I hug her back.

"Hi. I'm Julieta Monroe Diaz.", she says to Mama, "It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Mrs. Pine."

"The pleasure's all mine Julieta.", Mama says.

"That's weird. Usually people call me by my descendant name first. Then I have to correct them. Well most people. Not other descendants of course.", Julieta giggles, "Let's sit."

Cassandra

I pull out some dishes from the cabinet Elian pointed to. I know I should've told Kaideen about our past but I couldn't find the right time. There also was never an actual need to. I didn't want to alarm her when there was no immediate threat. She would've kept her head down her whole life and I didn't want that. But now...I don't know how I'll tell her.

"How've you been?", Elian interrupts my thoughts.

"Good. I managed to sustain a normal lifestyle. Despite being in hiding."

"Even gained some luxury of your own, right? Renee's jewels are magnificent."

"Yeah I treat her whenever I can. I love that woman more than the air we're breathing. How have you been?"

"Great. I mean Luci works a lot so I end up home alone with Julieta. But she calls everyday. We're guilty of spoiling Julieta. She asked to move here and Luci was fine with it as long as I am. She spoils us both really. I truly love her. Just wish I could see her more often."

I smile it's almost as if this is a normal conversation. It feels nostalgic.

"But... I love her but, just like before, I won't rat you girls out. This is a real complicated situation considering the children. I mean if it was like before you and Renee could just run. Or I wouldn't even be here in the first place."

I continue serving food. Elian's gotten more talkative. In a good way. She never used to express herself that much.

"I'm sorry. Luci's not here by the way. I didn't mean to scare you both. I just saw Kaideen and I knew. I knew that she had to be yours. I invited you over for confirmation. Also just in case you don't know that we're here."

"Yeah!", I laugh, "I had no idea."

"Kaideen...doesn't know does she?"

I sigh, "No. She doesn't. I don't know how to tell her."

"Just start with telling her her real name."

I laugh, "Right."

"By the way which goes first Ba or Pierce?"
