I woke up the next day and did the normal routine. Pony boy, Steve, soda, and I went to our business and the other boys went to their works. It was a casual day at work, which was always a lot of fun. And we were making decent money too. Through out the day Cherry, Mary, and Evie all came to say hi to their boyfriends before they went off to work.
Johnny got off work a little before I did everyday so he can always greet me or pick me up.
"Hey darlin you ready?" Johnny said quickly as he walked through the doorway. Then he started towards the car. He was wearing these huge black sunglasses, something was up.
"Yeah I'm ready, slow down." I paused
"Come here I haven't seen you all day." He came up to me and tried to kiss me but I stopped him.
"It's kinda hard to kiss with those huge sunglasses on, take em off."
"Nah it's fine." He said quickly "they look cool." He added as a excuse.
"Johnny why won't you take the sunglasses off?"
"No reason."
"Johnathan Nathaniel Cade take the sunglasses off"
"It's so bright outside though."
"Okay fine kiss me." I said in a soothing yet stern voice, pulling him closer to where I'm up against the wall and he's a inch from me. I put my arm around his back and then snatch the sunglasses.
"Anne not cool you tricked me." He said turning his face so I couldn't see it.
"Why won't you let me see your face,"
"Johnny." I added pulling his hands down from it and turning his body towards me.
He had two big nasty swollen black eyes.
"What happened?"
"I'm okay, I'm okay." Johnny said sounding ashamed.
"Cmon," I took his hand bringing him to a back room no one uses, so it was pretty much my area office thing.
"Sit here." I pointed to a big table in the middle of the room and shut the door and closed the curtains,
"I'm fine Anne I am. you dont have to check me there's nothing else, really"
"Take off your shirt." I said when I came and stood next to him with ice.
He did as I asked. One his stomach were big belt  and whip marks. And on his back was a giant purple bruise the size of a basketball. He put his head down.
"Baby, " I said in a soft pitiful voice.
I went in front of him and pulled his head up.
"You're okay now. Was it your parents again?"
He nodded with a sad face. I kissed his forehead then sat next to him and and turned his head towards me. I started icing around his eyes.
"It's just," he started "it's just I can't really do anything about it. It's happened the whole nineteen years of my life. And I know I'm big and strong enough to stop them, my dad. But he's my dad and I I just can't bring myself to shoving him away. Or even to defending myself with words. I'm scared Anne. I'm still scared of them. I don't act like it anymore but I am. If I defend myself they'll just insult me more and I don't know if I can take that."
A tear dripped down his face. I wiped it away. And he leaned his head on my shoulder. We sat there for a while. I was speechless. Because there really was nothing I could do. And it hurt to see him in pain.
"C'mon let's take a walk instead of driving." I said after bout twenty minutes.
He nodded. So then we walked hand in hand in the sun through the town. All around there were still socs harassing greasers like always.  Multiple times we had them yell at us or at least Johnny through car windows.
One time there was these around four soc guys with one girl. They were in front of us about twenty feet heading our way so they'd pass us. The girl was already being annoying yelling stuff at us. We ignored it. But as she moved closer there was more and more rude comments.
"They're so dirty. Gross." She said about two feet away from of pretending she was talking to the guys but said it very loudly so we'd hear it.
She was carrying a soda in a cup in her hand with no cap.
As they passed us she purposely splashed the Coke all over me.
I let out one of those surprised faces and my mouth and eyes were wide open. They stayed there and laughed for a minute. But then I said.
"You fucking bitch!" It was her turn to turn around and act surprised.
"I've had it up to here with you! Stop, it's not funny it's just fucking annoying!" I shouted.
I left them there with their jaws dropped. I took johnny's hand and walked fast away slaying.
"Oh my goodness Anne you really stood up for yourself, that was great!"
We went into a store and bought me a new shirt. We still walked around for a few hours until we heard struggling and yelling from a dark alley.
Me and Johnny looked at eachother.
"We have to help." He said
So we both made sure our switchblades were still in our pockets and went down the alley and the yelling became louder and louder.
There was four socs surrounding someone on the ground and was kicking the person hard. There was also a figure a few feet way watching.
"It's the bitch from earlier." I said to Johnny.
"Guys stop now. All you are is a bunch of bully's."
The guys didn't even look up. The guy on the ground was now silent.
"Well well well, all you are in annoying telling us to stop because we won't. Don't make us take care of you too." She said.
"Stop before we make you stop" I said.
The guys looked up and stepped towards us. Then one punched Johnny. Johnny punched one and he fell. He kicked another in the legs and he fell. Then he kicked one in the nuts and he fell. Note he did this while they were all attacking him at the same time.
I took on one of the guys by punching him then ducking when he tried to punch me back. I then kicked him in the shin really hard then kicked him in the nuts and he fell. I then went to the girl and slapped her and pulled her hair.
Then all it took was me to back up to be next to Johnny and we both pulled out our switchblades to try and scare them. It worked. Once they saw them they ran away faster then you could say that  socs suck.
I looked down on the ground to see a bloody beaten up boy that looked like he could be no older than 14
