Chapter nine

This kinda zooms in to around two months later

One day I woke up from the lot with Johnny. We fell asleep watching the stars again. It was a school day. Johnny said he had to get ready and I said to be careful and to come to the Curtis' if anything happens because I was going there to beg soda and Darry if I could hang out at the dx today. I really wanted to go to work with soda. Considering I might get a job at the dx since I never had anything else to do. And since I always needed money because either two bit would steal stuff for me of someone else would pay and I always felt bad. Plus I wanted to help Darry and soda pay the bills considering I slept on their couch sometimes and ate meals there.We walked together until we had To go to the separate houses and I gave Johnny a hug
"have a good day."
"you too darlin"
and I went to the Curtis' and started begging. When I finally got them to let me go with soda,Darry drove us three we first dropped pony off at school then he dropped me and soda off at the dx.
"Darry don't go to overboard on carrying that roofing."
I said.
"Yeah."
Soda chimed in.
"Okay okay"
Darry said
"Promise?"
"I promise"
Dar bear said with a smile then drove off.
Soda started doing random things and I followed him around.
"Hey Anne have you met Sandy yet? She's really special to me. I haven't told anyone this not even ponyboy yet but I think I'm gonna marry her."
Oh no how was I going to break this to soda.
"Soda, well it would be fun to meet Sandy and all but um how do I say this."
"Spit it out Anne. It's okay you can tell me."
He said with those reassuring eyes.
"maybe we should wait till later to talk about this."
"No it's okay tell me"
"Sodapop Sandy well she got pregnant,"
Soda cut me off with a smile.
"Soda,"
I went on putting my hand on his shoulder.
"The baby wasn't yours. Her parents wasn't gonna let her marry you even if you still wanted to at that point. They sent her out to live with her grandparents in Florida. You tried to send her a note but she returned it unopened. Soda I'm sorry but Sandy cheated."
His whole face just changed. All he said was
"I don't even know what to say to that. I wanna try to think you were lying but why would you lie you never lied to us. And how would you know she has grandparents in Florida and you already know everything else. Oh why would Sandy do that!? I thought she loved me!"
Soda just wasn't soda the rest of the day. I tried to do everything I could to cheer him up but he just pretended like he was fine. But you could see it. He just wasn't himself. I felt like it was my fault. Maybe I shouldn't have told him. But it was rude if I didn't. I just didn't know what to do.
Two bit came by and I asked soda if I could tell him
"I don't care." Is all he said going back to work.
Two bit was mad.
"That b**ch! You just can't do that to Sodapop you can't!"
I still kept telling soda I was sorry but he kept on just saying
"It's fine."
I couldn't wait till school got out and Steve came to work so I could have two but drive me to Johnny. I kept helping soda out around his work and thought it wasn't the best day to ask if he could ask his boss if I could work there. I just did whatever I could to help both him working and the Sandy thing. Finally Steve and I told him what happened he had kinda the same reaction as two bit.
"God she's just like Sylvia!"
I told him I felt guilty for telling him and Steve said
"It wasn't your fault Sandy did that or is gonna. And if you didn't tell him it would've been mean. It's alright just give him some space."
I then said goodbye to soda. After that I immediately got soda to drive me to the lot. I knew Johnny would be there. I was about to break down feeling so bad and seeing soda so sad. I had to see Johnny.
"Bye two thanks for driving me. We can hang out later I just really need Johnny right now."
"Bye Anne and it's alright I get it. You guys get up eachother in ways I don't understand"
He laughed
"Love birds"
He drove off and I saw Johnny walking. I ran up to him and immediately hugged him and broke down.
"Joh...Johnny"
I said between sobs
"Darlin I'm here what's the matter?"
"I for...forgot to to tell you that in in the "book" sa...Sandy cheats on so..sodapop and she she got pregnant and and her par.. her parents wouldn't let her mar marry soda even even if he still wanted to marry marry her and they sent sent her aw away to live with her grand her grandparents and soda soda he sent sent her a a letter and she she she she returned it unopened and oh what she did was s..soo mean Johnny and I just I..I..I just had to tell soda what she was gonna gonna do and he Just got so, so sad and he wasn't being so..soda and he he just wasn't himself and he was so so glu..glum and I I feel like it's my fault, my fault for tellin him I I I didn't want to make soda sad and Johnny I I couldn't break down in front of soda or Steve or even two so so I had to have him drive him here as as soon as you got ho home I I know I I'm mak making a big deal out of of this and I I shouldn't be the one the one crying but I I can't stand seeing so soda like this and it it kills me to know I might be the reason or he might be be mad at at me joh Johnny I don't know what to do "
He just hugged me tighter and held me for a couple minutes.
"Anne. Anne it's not your fault it's okay soda was gonna have to find out sometime. And he would've been mad at you for not tellin him if you knew. It's okay Anne you did the right thing."
He wiped the tears off my face and we went under the tree. I layed on my side and he layed right next to me put his arm over me and held me close. He kept on whispering
"It's okay Anne it's okay."
Until I calmed down. After my breathing was steady again we sat up.
"What am I gonna do? What if soda hates me? What if other people in the gang are mad at me too? What do I do Johnny what do I do?"
"We're just gonna go to the Curtis' and tell Darry and pony exactly what happened. We're gonna get a hold of Sandy and yell at her. And we're going to be extra nice to soda tonight okay?"
"Okay"
I said and we went to the Curtis'. Everything went like Johnny said it would. I first told Darry and pony. I was surprised because they weren't mad at me at all just like Steve two bit and Johnny weren't. We then got a hold of Sandy we told her how we knew she cheated on soda and that she was pregnant we yelled at her for breaking his heart. We told her to expect to break off with soda earlier then expected. Then dally  and two bit got back. I told dally and he wasn't mad at me. He was mad at Sandy for being like Sylvia . Then soda and Steve came home I asked Steve how sod was doing
"He said he definitely wasn't mad at you. He's just not himself"
But we all talked this and eventually got him to laugh. Made him realize he didn't need a dirty cheater like Sandy. After a while he went back to being usual old soda. I couldn't be happier.
