One - Our Fears

It's something that runs through everyone in their life. Fear, something that eats at everyone no matter who they are. It's the fear of losing everyone that hits me the most these days. I feel it every day, the chilling run of thoughts that only lead to death now. Having seen too much too soon to not be afraid.

The semi-safe world that I once knew is gone. Everything that we knew our world to be has been thrown away faster than anyone could have guessed. Everything that we took for granted is gone. Humans are a highly selfish species, put us one against another and we'll kill the other. I never liked the old world anyway, it never did me any good anyway.

That world was full of hate and people who think that they can step all over you. I guess that's not too far off from what it's like now. The only difference is that there was that chance of death everywhere you go. But that doesn't stop people from doing things much worse than they could before. No law to hold them back anymore, nothing to stop people from doing anything like murder or rape.

I guess nowadays it keeps to the "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" saying. It's a simple and stereotypical thing but it keeps me going. I guess it's one of those things that got me to where I am today. It got me through war, though the bullying, through the beatings. If that didn't kill me then there has to be someplace out there that wants me. That wants me and my brother and his daughter, I pray for that.

They are the only two people that I've got left, the only two people that I will fight to keep alive. Everything happened so quickly when I woke up to Jessica, Caleb's daughter, shaking me awake. I didn't see this coming in the slightest. That I'd have to kill one of my own, but she never really was. The group that we were with, stationed out at a gas station just outside of the city.

She'd woken me up, telling me that Caleb and Blake had gotten into another fight. Before I could tell her that she could stay, shots rang out and screaming started. Walker groaning was the next thing to hit, making me rush and pack up the little bit that I had unpacked. Next was the fire, starting up from a small campfire to taking over most of the tents.

I slung my bow over my back, holding my katana in one hand and I picked up Jessica in my other. "Don't look, Jess." I move out of the tent, eyes darting around for my brother. "Caleb!" I called over the screams, slicing a walker head in half.

People were being torn apart at the semes. Screams and calls for help fill the camp. Nothing like this had happened since we first set up. Guards were supposed to do their jobs, keeping up with the people and the walkers so that something like this didn't happen.

I rushed to their tent, not seeing Caleb anywhere. "Jess, sweetheart, pack up okay?" I set her down and push her into the tent. "Pack up the weapons," I comment, scanning for my blonde haired twin. I took another swing at a walker before Jessica came out, her pink backpack over her shoulders. She was tearing up, "It's gonna be okay. Let's go find your Daddy okay?" She nods, holding her arms out to me. I pick her up, her face pressing into my shoulder.

Jessica let out a scream when a walker near tackled me from behind before it was shot in the head. "Jess! Luna!" Caleb called, rushing up to us. He looked the two of us over for any injuries. "We need to leave." He urges and I nod, handing off Jessica to him. Blake was not far behind us as we left the camp. I took a few swings at walkers, two hands on my sword.

No farther than halfway along the highway is when I stop, looking at the trio when Blake started to complain about walking. "You want to stop and tell me why you're here princess?" I questioned, motioning for Caleb to keep going as Jess had fallen asleep. "This is where you're stopping," I tell her, my hand over my python.

She gave me a look, taking a step towards me. "Oh really? What are you gonna do? Shoot me?" She asks, seeing me draw my gun. "You really gonna take away the one love that your brother has?" I roll my eyes at her, pointing the weapon at her.

I glare at her, deadpanning practically. "I won't hesitate. I don't care for you, you lay your hands on my brother and that kid, you deserve to drop." She huffs, drawing her own gun to shoot me, but I'm quicker. She drops to the floor, bleeding from her head. "Warned yah," I say, turning and continuing on with my brother.

By daybreak we reached the city, it was nothing like we thought it was. The place belongs to the dead, walking both the streets and the alleys. When we got there they didn't miss a beat of chasing us. Jess was crying as we rushed through the street, hundreds of thousands of groans fill the air as walkers chase us.

I thank the Gods when we find a free alley, bolting down it. We got luckier when the back door to the building was unlocked. We were welcomed to two walkers and a nearly full thrift store. Caleb set Jessica down as I killed and moved the two walkers to the back. "We wait for everything to cool down before leaving, I suggest looting while we're here," I say, patting Caleb with a sigh. Everything went our way with looting until screams and a gunshot rang out.
