It's a bad plan, heading to Fort Benning after all that. That's the decision that was made though. Caleb took over driving when we had to stop and ditch three of our vehicles for the gas. Daryl's truck, T-dog's van, and Shane's jeep got left. All that we have now is the RV, Carol's Cherokee, my truck, and Daryl's bike.
At this point, it's a fight against the clock with the RV. Just as predicted, the RV came to a stop in the middle of the highway, the engine going up in smoke. "Shit," Caleb muttered stopping the truck and turning it off. The three of us get out and meet the rest of the group at the front of the RV. I ran my hand through my hair, watching Dale look at the RV hood before popping it to look at the engine itself. "Can you fix it?" Rick asks him as I turn and scan the area just in case with Caleb.
Dale looks at Rick. "It'll take a while," Dale says after a moment of silence, the group groaning at the annoyance at his answer.
My gaze goes to the different cars that are scattered about, each filled with different supplies and items from people who was either leaving or heading towards the city. "Until then, let's go through, clear a way for the RV when it's up and running, and go through for supplies," I suggest, looking back at the group, Rick nodding in agreement.
Lori was the one to speak her mind on the subject, making me roll my eyes. "This place is a graveyard, I'm not sure how I feel about this." She says, rubbing her arms.
I shake my head, turning and starting off to look through the cars. "You're gonna have to do a lot worse things out here sweetheart," I muttered, walking off.
The group, of course, followed my lead and started to look through the cars. Bottles of water, canned foods, clothes are most of the things that we find. Although I overheard Carl talking about finding a knife collection and after that I found a nice looking pistol and ammo in the glove compartment of a car.
I jump, almost screaming as a hand goes over my mouth. "Shh. . .under the car." Daryl's voice fills my ear as he signals for Carl to get under the car across from us.
Daryl pulls me down and under the car, our backs facing the truck that was tipped on its side. He kept his hand over my mouth as I try to calm my breathing. He had his arms wrapped around me, protecting me.
I turn a bit, placing my head against his chest, his heartbeat picking up. My eyes lock on Carl and Sophia, who were looking at me in the eyes. I couldn't see Caleb or Jess, making me start to panic.
I reach up, placing my hand over Daryl's before lowering his hand from my mouth. Everything seemed to be working, until T came around the corner, looking panicked. On his arm was a large cut, gushing with blood.
Daryl shifts, leaving me under the car with the squeeze of my shoulder. I watched him for a second before looking back to the kids. I hold my finger up to my lips, Walkers pass around us, stumbling about the place. I look back to see T and Daryl on the ground, dead walkers on top of them. The perfect cover.
They completely blended in as the walkers stumbled past them, not stopping for a second. I lock eyes with Daryl for the last few moments. No one moves, waiting a solid minute before getting ready to get out of our hiding spots.
I slide out from under the car, staying crouched just in case. On the other side of the car, a walker passes, making me start to head back to the RV. I get Caleb and Jess in my sights when the scream rings out.
In an instant, I turn on my heel and take off back to where the kids were to see that Sophia had taken off running, three walkers after her. "Shit," I muttered, jumping the railing and taking off after her.
Back on the highway, I could hear the group yelling for me and Sophia. I don't stop, following after the girl and the walkers. I curse myself for only having my knife and python on me, as well as the pistol I found in the car.
A flash of movement catches my eye, making me turn and dart towards it. "Sophia." I hiss, seeing the girl turn and look to me in a panic, darting into my arms. "Shh, easy kid," I muttered, eyes watching for the walkers that were drawing in.
She's panicked as all Hell. "Shoot them." She cries, reaching for my python. I shake my head, standing up and taking her hand.
I meet her eyes. "It'll make too much noise. I don't want to risk bringing the herd back to the group." I tell her, leading her to a creek. The water was shallow and calm, making me smirk as I get into the water, lowering Sophia in after me. "Okay, I need you to listen to me," I tell her, bringing her to an opening big enough for her to fit in.
She shakes her head as I push her towards it. "No." She says and I lock eyes with her.
"I'm gonna go take care of them okay? I need you to stay right here honey, okay? You don't move, but if you have to you head back to the highway. That way okay? No matter what, you keep the sun on your left okay?" I ask her, pointing towards the direction of the highway.
Sophia nods her head, moving back until she's out of sight unless you tried to look for her. I nod my head, turning to see the walkers coming up on us.
"Hey!" I yelled, splashing the water towards them. The two are locked on me right away. "Come on yah ugly bastards!" I yelled, my accent coming through as I walked backward, the walkers following me into the creek.
One nearly got the drop on me, making me stumbled and fall back, my hands catching me, wrist arguing with my decision. The walkers got to their feet, stumbling towards me. I back up, the water splashing around me as I did so.
I scrambled to my feet, taking off out of the creek, leading the walkers away from Sophia. They followed me out and into the woods some more. After a few minutes, I put some distance between me and the three walkers.
I leaned over, trying to catch my breath as I pulled out my knife. The moans and groans of the walkers filled the air. I gripped my knife, standing back up straight, wincing at the pain in my right hand. "Come on Luna," I muttered to myself as the first walker came into view.
It stumbled up to me and I grabbed it's shoulder in my left hand while stabbing it with the knife in my right. All the noise from the walker stopped and it fell to the floor, unmoving. I smirked, switching the knife to my left hand. I turned, looking for the other two walkers. The pair came into view, stumbling towards me nearly in synch with each other.
Growling under my breath, I took a step forward, thrusting my knife into the head of the walker to the left. The walker on the right drew in as I tried to pull my knife out of the walker's head. When it wouldn't budge I stood up straight, kicking the last walker back. It fell to the floor, next to a rock that gave me the idea to pick it up. After a few bashes from the rock, the walker stopped altogether, making me let out a breath of relief, sitting on the floor. "Jesus," I muttered, looking to where my knife was, still in the head of a walker.
