We've come up with a new plan about searching from this point forward. "We're splitin' up?" Daryl asks looking at Shane and Rick. I adjust my crossbow as I stand next to the pair.
"Yeah. Rick, Luna, and I will be out here for another hour or so just to be sure she ain't out around here." Shane said looking from Daryl to me.
"I want to go, please?" Carl said hopefully. Lori looked at him, smiled, and fluffed his hair.
Jess was next to be all about coming with us, begging Caleb to let her go with us. Caleb hesitated before saying yes, nodding to me. "Be safe okay stay near them at all times." And with that Carl ran up to us as we walked away from the rest of the group. I sent Caleb a look before following after the trio of boys, Jess at my side.
Different prints riddled the floor as we walked. Some walker or people and some deer. We kept looking for any sign of her. Nothing. No prints of her anywhere. It's like she disappeared into thin air. A cracking sound filled the air making us draw our weapons. I have an arrow drawn and ready as we look to a clearing. There stood a buck eating.
Quietly, I point my bow at the buck, arrow loaded and ready. Shane points his gun ready to shoot it only for Rick to stop him. Slowly Carl moves to the deer, Jess at his side, holding his hand. For a moment it felt like there were no threats in the world. Like we weren't looking for a girl who may or may not be dead.
The deer turns its head and looks at them making them stop. For a moment everything seemed to stop. That was until a gunshot rings out. The smiles on our faces were replaced with fear as Jess collapsed to the ground, Carl falling back with her. The area of her right rib cage was now covered in blood. I was by her side in a heartbeat.
My hands probing her body, bow over my shoulder. "Jessica!" I yelled with pure fear in my eyes. "Jess! Baby, don't die! Stay with me!"I drop to my knees beside her, Rick coming up quick beside me and sharing in my panic. Shane goes ahead, looking for the shooter. As fast as I can I check for a pulse, pleading that the shot didn't just kill her.
She was breathing and there was a faint heartbeat. Carl kneels on the other side of Jessica, looking at her with tears in his eyes. I put my hands over the wound and put pressure on it as Shane comes out with an overweight man dressed in camo. "This guy has a farm he'll show us," Shane yells pulling the man up.
Carefully, I pick up Jess and hold her close to my chest. "Which way?" I say looking at the two as Rick looked to Shane then to me. The hunter points off in a direction and I just run as fast as I can with Rick and Carl close behind, seeing that I'm faster. We get to a field and I start shaking, but I held it in for Jess' sake.
I quickly adjust my hold on her as my arms get tired. "Keep going that way." The man pants as Shane pushes him forward as he struggles to keep up.
"How far!?" I yell, anger clear in my voice.
"A little north. Talk to Hershel. He'll help him." He gasps trying to keep a breath in. Rick and I continue to sprint on, Carl falling behind with Shane and the man.
A small farm comes into view with a girl with brown hair stands. She yells something and four people come out. "Was she bit?" Asks an elderly man in the front of the group once we're close enough.
I shake my head, unable to catch my breath. "Shot. . .by your man" I pant once again adjusting my hold on her.
"Otis?" A woman asks stepping up with the rest of the group.
"He said find Hershel. Is that you? Help us please!" I say panicked holding him tighter.
He just nodded and lead us into the house. "Patricia! I need my full kit!" He says, "Maggie! Painkillers, grab everything. Sheets alcohol..."
"Is. . .Is she alive?" I ask, voice cracking as I spoke every word.
Herschel ignores his question, "Take the pillowcase, fold it into a pad." Rick does as he says. "Put pressure on the wound." He says putting the stethoscope to his chest. Rick puts the case over the wound and presses down with both of his hands, one on top of the other. "I've got a heartbeat but it's faint."
The moment he said that Rick was pushed back. "I've got it." Patricia I think was her name said as I backed up.
Herschel looks around the room. "Maggie IV." He said as I made my way to the door. "Your name?"
I froze up for a moment before answering. "L-Luna. . .I-I'm. .Luna." I answer, still in a daze.
"Luna. We're going to do everything we can." And with that, we were taken out into the hall.
