Chapter 12

I held tight to Chloe as we drove to the airport.  I knew it wasn't the safest thing to do, but she unbuckled once we'd gotten out on the road and sat in my lap.  I wrapped my arms around her and kissed her forehead as she leaned against me and tucked her head under my chin.  Only minutes later, she was asleep.  Creating the force fields must have taken a lot out of her.

Adrian was quiet in the seat beside me, but then he moved over and wrapped an arm around my shoulders.  I didn't object and leaned my head against his shoulder as tears streamed down my face.

"It's going to be okay," he said.  "You're okay."

"B-but Owen's not," I said.  "Alex has him.  He made him try to kill me!"

"It's okay," he said, putting his cheek against my hair.

I shook my head.  "No, it's not," I said.

We stayed like that until we got to the airport.  Even though I didn't like him very much, Adrian was a good support while I cried.  He didn't judge me for it either.  He hadn't see that side of me, the depressed side.

Adrian opened the door for me when we got to the airport.  He was willing to take Chloe, who was still sleeping, but I didn't want to let her go.

"I'm fine," I said, sliding out with her.

Chloe moved when I moved her in front of me.  She wrapped her arms and legs around me and laid her head against mine, sighing.  I could feel her soft breath brushing against my hair.  I closed my eyes for a moment before following Adrian toward the waiting jet.

Once we were on board Adrian found a pillow and blanket in one of the overhangs and reclined one of the seats.  Once he had it to where it was a makeshift bed, I set Chloe down on it, buckled her up, and tucked the blanket around her.

"Come on," Adrian said, grabbing my hand.  "Let sit in one of the seat in the middle so we won't wake her up."

"But..." I started, looking back at her.

"She'll be fine," he said.

He pulled me toward where there were two seat together.  He sat down in one of them, but I stayed standing.

He looked up at me expectantly.  "Are you going to sit down?" he asked.

"It depends," I said, looking from him to the seat and back to him again.

Adrian raised an eyebrow as he continued to look up at me.  After another moment of just standing there, I sighed and sat down next to him, buckling up since I knew we were going to be taking off in just a few moments.

It was a few minutes after we took off that I felt Adrian look over at me.

"What?" I asked without even looking.

I felt his gaze stay on me and then heard him sigh.  "You still love him, don't you?" he asked.

I swallowed hard, urging the tears not to start flowing again, and leaned my head back against the headrest.  After a moment, I looked over at him.

"Yeah, I do," I said.

He nodded, looking kind of disappointed.  "I kind of figured, even if I didn't hear your conversation.  Just looking at you, I knew something was still between the two of you."

My eyebrows furrowed.  "You were watching?" I asked.

He smirked.  "We had to to make sure that he didn't see us get to the SUV."
