Chapter 6
He knew he wasn’t supposed to have the picture of her, but he just couldn’t help but take it when he saw it on the desk in Alex’s office. He hadn’t seen her in three months, though for two and a half of those months he’d still been ‘sleeping’ as Alex had put it.
But now he was awake and he couldn’t get her out of his head. That was how it was since he’d first saw her their freshman year of high school.
He remembered that day perfectly. It had been just a week after his power appeared, right after his grandfather passed.
He had been living with his grandparents since his parents were barely home to take care of him, even though he could now take care of himself. His grandfather had a heart attack while they were eating dinner and never regained consciousness. His power had appeared throughout all of the chaos.
He thought that nothing could make his grandfather’s death fade away from his mind on the first day of high school. But when he went with all of the other freshmen to the auditorium to hear the principal welcome them to the school, he saw her and it did.
He’d seen her sitting with her friends near the front of the auditorium. Her long, curly blond hair was pulled up in a ponytail and it swung from side to side and she looked back and forth between her two friends sitting on either side of her.
Just then, another guy had come up to her…and it looked like he was flirting with her. She smiled up at him as they spoke for a moment before he left. She then giggled with her friends as the three of them watched him walk back toward his chair.
He already hated the guy for making her smile and giggle like that.
He wanted to be that guy for her.
Just then, her eyes skimmed over and stopped on him. They seemed to widen just a little as she stared at him. And even though he’d only had his power for a week, he still knew what the feeling was when the energy was building within his body. Just that one look from her made the feeling come stronger than ever before.
And he knew that she was the one he was going to fall in love with.
After his power appeared, his grandmother had told him all about what some of the people in their family could do. She also told him just what she could do.
And what was going to become of his life.
And who he was going to love and be with for the rest of his life.
“She’s a girl like you,” she’d said to him, smiling slightly as she put her hand on his head. “The girl of the four elements. You’re going to love her and she’s going to love you. Your love will be just like mine and your grandfather’s was. One that will last your entire lives.”
“But who is she?” he’d asked. “Why can’t you just tell me now?”
She’d shaken her head. “Because she doesn’t know she has powers just yet and she won’t until her eighteenth birthday. You’ll find her, though, on your first day of school. And you’ll fall in love with her then.”
Remembering those days with his grandmother before he finally moved out and into the house that he’s parents had bought for him brought a slight smile to his face.
He looked back down at the picture of her, the girl that he’s grandmother had told he’d fall in love with the first time he’d seen her. He knew he certainly did and only grew to love her even more as the days, weeks, years went by.
And he couldn’t wait until he could see her again.
