Chapter 9

Since we all had English together last class, after school let out, we all headed for the Escalade together.  But before we got there, we noticed Zack’s car in the space beside it and him sitting in the driver’s seat.  Once we were close enough, he got out and smiled.

“How was school?” he asked.  The question was directed at me.

“Same old, same old,” I said, shrugging.  “Though now people know that I’m crazy.  It’s quite fun actually.”

He laughed and motioned for me to get in his car.  “Come on,” he said.  “You’re coming with me.”

“Where are you taking me?” I asked cautiously as I walked toward the passenger side door.

“Don’t worry,” he said.  “I’ll tell you when we get there.”  He looked back at the others.  “We’ll be a few hours and then I’ll bring her back to the house.”

“Dinner will be ready for you when you get home, honey!” Talen said in a girly voice.

“Don’t be too late or it’ll get cold!” Maverick said right after him.

I rolled my eyes as I opened the door.  “You two are so weird,” I said, and got in Zack’s car.

Once he was in, he buckled up and started out of the parking lot.

“So what are we doing?” I asked.

He smiled over at me.  “I’m taking you to my lab,” he said.  “I’ve done tests on everyone and now it’s your turn.  Don’t worry.  They’re not going to hurt.  We’re just going to test you and see if you’re like the others.”

“In what sense?” I asked, looking back out the windshield.  “I mean, we don’t have the same abilities…”

“No, but you’re alike in a few other ways,” he said.  “We just have to make sure you’re the same as them in that sense.”

He didn’t say anything more as he drove down the street for a couple of miles and then got onto the highway.  There was a lot of traffic since everyone was getting off for the day, but then he got off on one of the exits.  After a few red lights, he turned down another road that led to what looked like a row of medical buildings.

“So is this where you’re going to make me your lab rat and conduct tons of experiments on me?” I asked jokingly.

He laughed as he rubbed his hands together.  “Of course,” he said in a creepy voice.  “This is my medieval lab where I like to torture my patients while I laugh like an evil genius.”

I just stared at him before I started laughing.  “Wow,” I said.  “For a man who’s in his thirties, you sure do need to stop hanging around Talen and Maverick.  I think they’re craziness is rubbing off on you.”

Zack laughed again, but normally this time.  “What can I say?  I’m excited to see what’s going on with you,” he said.  “Oh, and I’ve still got six months until I’m in my thirties, thank you.”

I widened my eyes as I looked at him.  “You’re only twenty-nine?” I asked.  “Really?  And you’re already the head doctor for a mental hospital?”

He nodded, grinning.  “I was top of my class in medical school and the first pick for the job,” he said.

“Wow,” I said, nodding, impressed.

We got out then and headed for the building.  There were a few cars in the parking lot, but not many.

When we walked in, he led me down a long hallway and to a sliding glass door that looked like it was blacked out.  After pressing in a code into a keypad on the side of the door, it slid open, revealing an area with a few machines with wires sticking out and a treadmill.
