Chapter 16

Later that evening, I went upstairs with Chloe so she could pick out her room.  It wasn’t that hard for her to since the room next to what used to be Owen’s was practically decorated for her in pinks and greens.  I was guessing Sarah did it after hearing we were going to have a five year old living with us.

“I want this one!” Chloe said right when I opened the door. 

I laughed as she ran and jumped on the bed.  “Okay, you can have this one,” I said, walking toward her as she continued to jump up and down. 

“Which room is yours?” she asked. 

I smiled as I stood in front of her.  “Arin’s is right across the hallway from yours and then mine in the next door to the right,” I said.  I raised an eyebrow.  “You do know which way is right and which way is left, right?”

She nodded as she paused from jumping on the polka dot comforter and lifted her right hand.  “That way,” she said, pointing to her right.

I smiled.  “Right,” I said.  “But I don’t sleep in my room at night so I won’t be in there if you need to find me for some reason.”

Chloe looked confused.  “Where will you be?” she asked. 

“In the room across the hallway from my actually room,” I said. 

“Why do you sleep in there?”

“Because I can’t sleep in my room.”

“But why?”

I shook my head.  “No more questions,” I said.  I pointed to the door that led to the bathroom.  “Now, it’s time for a bath and then for bed.  We’ve got a busy day tomorrow.”

Chloe started jumping up and down on the bed again.  “Can I have a bubble bath?” she asked excitedly.

I laughed, nodding.  “I’ll go start it and you take off your clothes,” I said. 

“But what am I going to put on?” she asked.

“Do you have any pajamas?” I asked.

Her mouth turned down in a frown.  “I don’t have any,” she said sadly.

“You don’t?” I asked, and she shook her head.  “Well, then, you can just sleep in one of my t-shirts tonight and we’ll put that on our list of things to get tomorrow when we go shopping.”

Her eyes widened and excitement was back in them.  “Do we get to go with Arin and Variel?” she asked, jumping up and down again. 

I laughed.  “You like them, huh?” I asked.

She nodded enthusiastically.  “Yeah!” she said. 

“Good,” I said, smiling.  “And yes, we are.  We’re going with everyone.”

I went to the bathroom and started the bath.  I poured some of the soap in it and before I knew it, the bubbles were getting higher and higher.

“Chloe!  Get in here before all of the bubbles are gone!” I yelled. 

She came in running and jumped into the bathtub.  I smiled as she was immersed in the bubbles and was playing around with them. 

I tried to help her, but she said she was ‘a big girl and knew how to do it’.  I made sure she did before I got up and went to get one of my t-shirts and a pair of her panties from her duffel  bag. 

Once I had her dried off and into her pajamas, I carried her to the bed and I pulled down the covers.  She immediately snuggled into the pillows and yawned.
