The next day was the first day of school. As I got on the bus I expected to see Scott in our usual spot, but he wasn't there. At school I wasn't worried about the new class, the teacher or anything, but Scott. When the bell rang for recess I ran outside hopping to see Scott waiting, but he wasn't there either.
After I got off the bus I went straight to Scott's and rang the bell. His mother answered and told me that Scott wasn't feeling well and would be out for a few days. I went to my window and called to him. He didn't answer. In fact for three days Scott was out of school and didn't answer when I called from the window.
By Thursday Scott was waiting for me on the bus. He wasn't his usual chatty self, but I was still happy to see him. "Feeling better?" I asked. "Much, thanks." "Well are you going to tell me about your nightmare?" I asked curiously. "I don't want to talk about it." Now I was really worried. Scott told me everything. He once told me everything he had eaten that day just to avoid silence. Now we rode in silence for the rest of the ride to school.
At recess I tried again to ask Scott about his dream, but this time he told me to drop it and walked off. I felt lost without my best friend. What had happened for him to be so different in just a week? This wasn't the Scott I knew.
