I slowly open my eyes. I'm blinded by white light. I squint until I can see clearly. There's this light swinging above me. I try to push myself up to a sitting position, but I can't. I'm too weak. So instead I turn my head and I look at my surroundings. I'm in a white room, there are other beds, well cots in here. On a table to my right I see some medical supplies. What catches my eye is that on the table I see this wand type thing that has different symbols engraved into it. What is that? I feel like I should know something, but I just don't.
I suddenly hear voices out in the hall. "What if she doesn't wake up?" A worried voice asks. The person is female, at least from what I could tell.
"Give her time, Jocelyn," another woman answers, "she nearly died. She might need some more time to recover."
"But a week? I don't think it should've taken her this long, Maryse. She's been like this for a week. What if she's in a coma?"
"I think she'll be fine. Trust me, this definitely isn't the first time she's had a close encounter with death. You even know that."
"I know, I know. But for some reason I think this time is different. I just feels different. I mean the demon they were fighting just disappeared after getting caught in Isabelle's whip. I don't know whether it accomplished what it wanted to accomplish it not."
Who are these people? Are they talking about me? I have no clue. I just woke up and I don't know what happened and what's happening.
"Can I at least go check on her?" Jocelyn asks.
I don't know what else was said, but I didn't catch it. I see and hear the door knob turn. Two people step in. One of the women has red hair while the other one has dark black hair. Their hair kinda stands out against their white skin. Their skin isn't necessarily pale, but it's a fair white. Why on earth am I thinking about their skin? I have no clue.
They must've noticed I was awake because the one with the red hair, I'm pretty sure this one is Jocelyn rushed over to me. "Clary!" She sighs with relief, "thank the angels you're awake!" She tries to embrace me but I shrink away from her. I don't even know who this woman is and she's trying to give me a hug?
"Clary, what's wrong?" Jocelyn asks me. I shake my head , "Where am I," I ask , "and who are you?" Jocelyn looks at me, eyes filled with disbelief and horror. "C'mon Clary, stop playing around. You know who I am," She says with a hiccup in between her sentences. "Who am I?" I ask.
Jocelyn gasps and takes a step away from me. I don't know what her expression is because it's like a whole bunch of emotions crashed into one, where you can't really pick out a certain one. She gives Maryse a look and Maryse shakes her head. Maryse comes over to me this time. She pulls up a chair beside the bed I'm laying on.
"Do you really not remember anything?" Maryse asks me. I nod. I don't remember anything. I remember how to breathe and all of that stuff, but people, places, things, they're all blurry. Like they were once there, but then they're not.
"Do you think you'll be able to walk?" she asks me, concerned. I nod once more. "I think I can but I'm not all too sure. I couldn't sit up, my arms are too weak."
"Give it time," she tells me, "here, let me help you out of bed. Maybe taking you around the Institute will jog you memory." What is the Institute? Where are we going? So many questions go through my mind. I let Marsye help me stand up. I take a small step forward. I nearly fall, but I balance myself out. My legs are sore, but I think I'll live... hopefully. Maryse leads me out of the room, Jocelyn following us about five feet behind. She shows me all sort of different rooms, but our final stop was the library.
"Could you possibly wait in here for a few minutes, Clary?" Maryse asks, "Jocelyn and I need to do a few things real quick. You're welcome to read any of the books here." Then both of the women leave the room. So I guess I'm Clary, since they keep addressing me as that. There's a bookcase that is protected by glass, probably there so people like me don't touch it. I have no clue what that means but, oh well. I go over to it and I look at myself in the reflection from the glass. I have fiery red hair that's in a tangled mess, I'm wearing a blue, plain, cotton tee. I'm also wearing black sweat pants. I have no clue how these got on me, probably when I was asleep. I spot something on my arm but I'm not sure what it is. I look down at it instead of in the reflection and I find that there are similar markings on my arm that was on the wand thingy. What I also don't get is that they're not just on my arm, they're all over me. Strange how I'm covered with these tattoo-like things and I don't even know how they got there. The blackness of the markings stand out against my pale skin.
