Evan
"What did you guys talk about?" Diane asked as the wind coming inside the car blew her hair everywhere.
I know she was asking because she cared but I didn't how to politely tell her to mind her business.
"Just stuff."
"Stuff like?"
"Us."
"Care to elaborate?"
"Not really." I admitted. I just wanted to drive in silence and she was kind of ruining that for me. I heard her sigh from beside me.
"Honestly, I think something is weird going inside that castle. I don't know if I want you hanging around Gary anymore."
"You're not my mom." I said offended. Diane always told me what to do but now she was taking it too far. "I like Gary."
"I'm looking out for you. You know that."
"Yea but you're not my mother."
"I love you."
"Well if you love me, let me be happy."
"There's plenty of guys that has nothing to do with that castle."
"I'm twenty nine! I have absolutely no experience with men. Just today, alone with him, was the best day of my life." As soon as the words left my mouth, I realized how true they were. A huge part of me already missed Gary. After having so many endless crushes on strangers from afar, I realized this is what it meant to genuinely like someone.
"You said moving in with me was the best of your life." Diane said like she was close to tears. Moving in her WAS the best day of my life.
Sixteen Years Ago
"Heyy Evan. Oh my gosh. Why are you crying? Don't tell me because Mr. Edward gave you another B+. I'll unscrew his chair if you want. He won't even see it coming."
"No Diane don't." I said through my sobbing. "He didn't do anything. It's my parents."
"Aww Evan, everyone fights with their parents."
"They're gone Diane." Even back then, it was hard to say dead.
"Gone? They'll be back from their trip soon." My parents always went on trips because they were Geographers that studied abroad but they always came back. Not this time.
"Dead Diane. They're dead. I'm going to have to go into foster care because I have no other family."
"I'm so sorry Evan. I wish I could do something." Diane said close to tears. She always told me my parents were the parents she wished she had; she loved them like they were her own.
"It's fine. I just hope we can always be friends forever."
"I'm not your friend." I looked at her feeling the tears rushing to my eyes again. I was really all alone. "I'm your sister."
"We were twelve years old. You can't expect me to hold on to that memory forever."
"I am. I've never met anyone that I love more than you." I didn't respond to her. I just kept quiet so we could drive in complete silence. When we reached the outskirt of the village. I started to admire the scenery.
"I'm really glad we decided to move back to the village." I admit.
"Me too but I think we should go back home soon." Diane replied
"Why?" I asked bewildered.
"It's not for me plus I'm basically finished with my business."
"Can you tell me what it is now then?" I asked interested. She looked hesitant to respond. She even look like she was going to pretend she didn't hear me. She took a minute before she parked the car on the side of the road.
"When we were thirteen and you were at some debate practice or whatever, a man came to my parents' estate and he said he knew your parents. This was basically right before we moved to the city by the way. He said he was from the village's castle. I asked him how he knew them and he just said they lived with him, inside the castle."
"My parents didn't live in the castle." I said confused. Did they?
"That's what I told him. He said everything was complicated and he needed to talk to you. I told him you didn't live with me and he never came back."
"You never told me." I whispered. I felt betrayed.
"I know! And it has been eating me alive for years. The guilt. I came back here to find out if you really did have some family living in that castle."
"You never told me." I repeated. "Why?"
"Because I was a selfish thirteen year old! I didn't want your real family taking you away from me. But I felt horrible. I mean what if you were the princess of that castle or something? I have taken that opportunity away from you."
A man from the castle of werewolves visited me. Did that mean...?
"Diane, take me back." I commanded.
"Look I said I'm sorry."
"This is not about you right now! I have questions that you can't answer."
"Okay." She started the car and made a turn back to the castle.
When we reached, I told Diane to go home. She tried to protest but she did as I said.
I knocked on the castle and luckily enough Gary opened it. He looked sick and I was worried but right now, I needed to be selfish.
"I'm ready to talk."
