I drove on the road like a crazed maniac for two reasons. For one, I had to get these brothers the vaccinations they both needed. And two, I needed the truth.
The truth from my mate. The one I was destined to be with. The one I should be able to trust with my everything. The one who should feel the same way. I needed the truth that she wouldn't hurt me, my family or friends.
I almost rammed my car into the castle's gates by how fast I was going. I swerved after entering the gates and hopped out the car.
"Take them inside!" I yelled out to Robino before running inside myself.
"Dr. Powell, I need help. Ready two vaccinations." I said to Dr. Powell through the mind link while running up the stairs. "Two wolves need your help in my side of the castle."
I opened my room door to see her sitting next to my bed on the floor with tears running down her eyes. She looked up at me. She looked fragile.
"Hey." Evan whispered. "Diane was- she was...she's gone."
"I'm sorry to hear that." I said through clenched teeth.
"She was my only family left and now she's gone."
"We found out who started spreading the disease. I think you know who it is." I said calm.
She covered her mouth and started crying again.
"Why did you do it Evan?"
"She's my only family. I know it's not fair but I can't just literally throw her to a pack of wolves."
"What are you talking about?" I asked confused.
"Diane. I told her to run. I gave her a heads start." Her tears were beginning to dry up and she sniffed. "What did you think we were talking about?"
"Diana? She started this?"
"Who did you think?" We both grew silent as realization dawned on both of us. "You came to accuse me? How horrible of a person do you think I am?" She stood up and took several steps back.
"I don't know Evan but you just let a criminal, a freaking murderer, walk away."
"She was getting revenge for my family. Her intentions were good."
I scoffed in disbelief. "You know that's the second time I'm hearing that excuse today? Your parents killed each other for pete's sake!"
The truth killed her. It visually killed her. She tried to speak but chocked on her words. The only thing she could squeak out was "What?"
"Fuck. Evan. It wasn't supposed to come out like that."
"How?"
"Your mother had the Desdemon wolf."
"My mother..." Was the only thing she said before tears rolled down her cheek.
I scooped her into my arms and tried to comfort her while she stared off like she was in a trance. Her body was frozen, not moving at all. I finally lifted her up and put her underneath the covers and held her until her eyelids closed and I was convinced she had fell asleep.
I stood up and watched her as I contacted everyone, including Robino, for an emergency meeting. After everyone agreed and I turned to leave, I heard her whisper.
"Diane tried to kiss me."
I rotated my body quickly to face her but she was still in the same position like she never said a word.
I entered the board room and everyone turned to me. I was surprised to see Robino standing away from everyone; the doctors, warrior wolves and the Royals.
"Gary? What is going on?" Erica asked.
"Evan told me..." I started.
"That she started spreading the distemper." Robino added on.
"What?" Everyone either yelled or whispered. Kent stood up outraged and I almost tackled his ass back in his seat.
"That's not at all what happened." I said taking my seat hoping Kent would get the memo to sit down as well. "That was a misunderstanding."
"How do we know that's the truth?" Trish asked. She was one of our top fighters and even trained our queen. She was never one to smile but right now, she looked pissed. "How do we know you are not just covering for your mate?" She spat out angrily.
"Because she told me Diane confessed to the crimes before leaving."
"Diane? Flaming red hair?" Rochelle asked. "I got bad vibes from that girl."
"Why would a human, who probably knows nothing about us try to kill us?" Kent asked.
"That's the thing she knew a lot about us. Maybe too much."
"You didn't answer the question Gary." Alerick spoke up for the first time. "What did the werewolf community do to her? What is her motivation?"
"Revenge for Evan's parents. Diane thought werewolves killed Evan's parents and thought killing us all would impress Evan. That is another misunderstanding. Long story short, Diane was wrong. The Moon Goddess takes responsibility for their death; said it's her biggest mistake."
"You talked to her." Erica asked matter of factly.
"Yea." I said in a shaky breath. "Sorry I didn't tell you. She's way different than you told me by the way."
"She is who you need her to be." Erica and Alerick said at the same time before smiling at each other.
"When you think about, that's a lot to go through for a friend." Rochelle said getting back on topic.
"I think Diane is in love with her." I whispered and everyone turned to me. "Evan told me in her sleep that Diane tried to kiss her."
"Woah. Plot twist. " I didn't see his lips move but I'm 100% sure Robino said that.
"What's the next step?" Rochelle asked. "I'm ready for some action."
"We hunt." I said. "Knowing that some wolves are on Diane's side, she's going to be a little challenging to find but once we find her, it's going to be fun to rip her apart."
Everyone smiled at the thought, even Erica and the doctors who would probably miss out on this trip.
Trish stormed out the room and I followed quickly behind.
"What's your problem with my mate?" I yelled after her.
She faced me quickly and I could almost see the steam coming out of her ear. "I don't have a problem with your mate. I have a problem with that rogue you brought into our castle. That...that mutt!"
"Who? Robino? He's harmless."
"He's already ruining my life."
"How? He just got here." She turned away and began walking down the hall.
"Because unfortunately he's MY mate."
I stood silent until I saw Robino exit the conference room.
"What's up with warrior princess?"
"You didn't hear any of that?"
"No my system is filled with wolfsbane. Can't hear anything more than a couple feet away."
"And can't smell anything." I stated realization setting in. "You don't know, do you?"
"Know what?"
"Nevermind that." I laughed to myself not wanting to ruin the surprise. "How good are you when it comes to hunting?"
He smiled slyly. "The truth is, I'm the best."
