Decided to take one of my favourite songs, Taken by Sleep by Tyler Joseph, and make it into a one shot.
The song is above, please enjoy.

This is a story about a scarlet letter... Yeah.

I laid in my bed, wide awake, staring at the ceiling with nothing but my thoughts. I hated that, sitting in the dark with my thoughts. They scared me.
Looking over at my alarm clock on my bedside table, I saw it was 4:00 in the morning. Pitch black, the world asleep.

It just hit me as I lay my head down
No one around in the dark cold night, I hear a sound
In my head, repeat track of all you've ever said
Must be something, but it's nothing, so I just go back to bed

It'd been two months since Arthur and I had broken up, and we haven't spoken since.

It's four, crack the door to the hallway of my dreams
But it seems that my hallway keeps closing in on me
Forcing me out, making me think about you and how you're gone
I see four o' five with tears eyes and then I write this song

I got up, and sat by my desk, taking out a scarlet envelope. I'd been keeping notes in it for a while, like a diary, but in an envelope. Every time one of my scarlet envelopes was filled to the point I could barely close it, I sealed it up and put it in a box underneath my bed. I've only been doing this for a year, but the box is nearly full.
I began mindless scribbling words on paper, writing absent thoughts. Nothing quite too important, but meant everything to me.

4:05. I begin to fold the paper, jamming it into the envelope, when I stop, tossing the envelope to the side and whipping out another piece of paper as I scribble down words, lyrics, a song.

And I can't believe it has to be this way
You know it seems to me that it was just the other day
I saw your face, I saw your light, you ran the race, you fought the fight
But now it's all been torn down for me tonight

I sit at my piano in the hallway at 4:10, figuring out what notes, what tunes I wanted. The whole time, I just wanted him beside me. Arthur had always sat beside me when I wrote my songs, when I played the piano, and the bench felt empty without him. Sometimes he had played guitar alongside me. Mathias had played drums. Gil played guitar or trumpet, and had even learnt piano, but I assumed that was for more reasons than he simply wanted to.

But it was just me, my thoughts, and my piano.

And I know it might be a little selfish for me to say
But I need to know if you thought of me at all today
Cause every day walk past the place you lived five days of the week
But now it's ten after four, and I am taken by sleep

I woke up around eleven in the afternoon, having fallen asleep on the piano and now having the keys imprinted on my face, which wasn't the first time that had happened. Standing up and taking my notes and my song that I had written at 4:10 in the morning, I wandered into the kitchen, ate breakfast, and wrote music. Many people don't know I can write music, play the piano, or sing. But I love it, it's a passion of mine.
And this time, I only want one person to hear it.
I wrote this song so he knows I miss him, and I'm sorry.

Spending hours on end, deciding what I'd say to a friend if I ever saw him again
Cause I don't know if I know, don't wanna come across the wrong way
And I don't know if I know, but I know I wanna see your face today

At 3:40 in the afternoon, I finished my song. I got up, walked out the door, clutching the paper firmly, stuffing it into a scarlet envelope, and walking out into the street, daylight shining down on me. I was tired, I looked like absolute shit, but I had to see him. I had to give this to him.
I thought about what had happened the last time we'd talked, almost two months ago.

And somebody told me they saw you cry and break down
Do you know how hard that is to get around and think about?
It's not like you to let emotions get the best of things
Especially when everything is hanging in the air we breathe

Walking down the street, on my way to his house. Singing the song in my head. He probably didn't want to see me. He might slam the door on my face. I knew what I'd do if that happened.
I'd cry.
But I'd leave the scarlet envelope on his doorstep. It didn't matter if he hated me or not, I still loved him, and I wanted him to know that.

And I just can't believe it has to be this way
You know it seems to me that it was just the other day
I saw your face, I saw your light, you ran the race, you fought the fight
But now it's all been torn down for me tonight

And I know it might be a little selfish for me to say
But I need to know if you thought of me at all today
Cause every day walk past the place you lived five days of the week
But now it's ten after four, and I am taken by sleep

Walking up to his house, I doubted what I was doing. Maybe I should just knock on his door, drop the envelope and run? My legs felt like lead. I wanted to see him, his face, his smile, feel him, his love again. It probably wouldn't happen.

I rang the doorbell.

I'll sing a song to you, my friend
I'll sing a song to you, my friend
I'll sing a song to you, my friend
I'll sing a song to you, my-

Arthur opened the door. He looked as exhausted as I did. Dark marks hung under his usually bright green eyes. He was still in pyjama bottoms and an oversized shirt, which I assumed he'd sleep in. This wasn't the Arthur I remembered. He laid eyes on me and his eyes filled with tears. I didn't know if he was happy or not. He was a mess.
I did this to him.

He lunged into me suddenly, nearly knocking me over. His arms wrapped tightly around my waist in a desperate hug, I could tell he was crying into my shirt. I felt my own tears stream down my face. His sobs mingled with his words, things like "I'm sorry" "I missed you" "I wanted to call, but I thought you were still mad" "I'm sorry, I'm sorry."

I stared at him, gently holding him, ignoring that we were still standing on his porch and crying over each other. "I wanted you to see this." I said, handing him the scarlet letter. "I wrote it last night... I didn't think you'd want to see me again, so I have a bunch of ice cream in my freezer if you want to go back to my place and we can talk this over."

Arthur's green eyes bore into me, as he smiled softly. It was like a sad smile, like he was conflicted whether or not to kick me out. He clutched the envelope tightly, he still wore a ring that I had given him when I promised to marry him. He still wore it, even after two months.

"Yeah. I'd like that." He said softly, almost whispering. "I missed you."
"I missed you too." I said, kissing the top of his head.

I'll sing a song to you, my friend
I'll sing a song to you, my friend
I'll sing a song to you, my friend
I'll sing a song to you, my friend
