It's been a month since I started my second year residency. Ethan has tried to talk to me here and there but I simply dismiss him. I am now at a point where I can exchange hello's with him, though.
I stood outside of the emergency room, waiting for the ambulance to pull up. Finally they did.
"What do we have?" I demanded as they rolled the gourney towards me.
"Man hit by truck. His skull is smashed, you're gonna need help on this one." The paramedic warned as I looked down at the man. He was drenched in blood with a clear indent on his head. Just then, Ethan ran outside.
"I was paged to help, what's going on?" He questioned.
Great. He's here.
I pointed to the man's head. "Yea, I do need your help."

We were working on the patient all day, and talking. We had civilized, normal conversations. Maybe me and him can be friends again like we used to.
"Good work today, S." Ethan announced to me as he stepped inside the elevator. I stood in the hallway and smiled at him as the doors closed.
"You too." I managed to say before they shut.

"Hello?" I asked through the phone.
"Scarlet! It's Ethan." My stomach dropped when I heard his voice. Why is he calling me?
"Oh..uh, hi. What's up?" I tried to sound as if I wasn't taken aback.
"I just got called in to trauma again. And I want you to do it with me. We work well together." He sounded amused.
"If you're trying to be work buddies.. The answer is n-" he cut me off.
"The answer is yes okay come help me bye!" He yelled before hanging up. I rolled my eyes. Hell no.

"So you guys are talking again?" Christina questioned as we took shots of tequila on the couch.
"Not like, romantically. We're on good terms though and we are becoming friends again."
"Well that's good, isn't it? Why are you taking shots if it's good?" She replied with confusion plastered on her face.
I sighed. "It's not good, it's bad. It's bad because I'm still in love with him." Christina's jaw dropped as well as her empty shot glass.
"Scarlet... No. Darling, you're going to kill yourself. Not literally, but you're walking into a trap to get hurt again." She whispered. I looked down. She's right.
"I know- I just- I want to be friends with him still. I've practically hauled him through this program with me and when I become a surgeon I want him standing next to me." I used a stupid work excuse as I always do, avoiding eye contact with her.
"Don't tell him." She finally said, pulling my chin up so I could look at her. "Let him break first. Wait until he actually falls onto his knees begging you to take him back as he sobs and pleads. Wait until he looks as broken as you did the day he cheated on you. And that's when you tell him. That's when you can be with him."
"But.. What if he doesn't do that?" I answered sadly, with hope that she'd tell me to just tell him then.
"Do you really want to be with someone who doesn't beg to be with you?" She patted my shoulder and left me to think. Shit.
