Chapter 23

A week passes by. The school still doesn't know about Riley and Lucas their secret relationship. The week passed by fast and before they knew it it was Friday. The weekend was close by and the gang planned a day to the beach. But Riley was filled with concern. Cause she was supposed to get her period the day they returned from Texas. Riley felt nervous and maybe she was overreacting but she had to be sure. She was off all day and Maya tried to find out what was wrong. When the last bell rang Riley was the first to run out of the classroom and Maya immediately followed after her. "Riley wait!" Maya catched up with Riley and stopped her. "Riles! What's wrong?" She asked holding Riley by her shoulders. Riley stared at her friend with a blank expression. "Has this something to do with huckleberry?" Maya asked. She rolled up her sleeves and balded her fists. "Oh when i see him-" Riley pushed Maya's arms back down and shook her head. "This has nothing to do with Lucas ok?" Maya frowned confused. "Then what's the matter?" Maya asked. Riley sighed and pulled Maya into the janitors closet. Until she knew that no one was listening she turned to Maya. "I'm Late" Riley said. Maya widened her eyes. "You're pregnant?" She said shocked. Riley hit her hand in front of maya's mouth to shut her up. "I don't know yet, i haven't taken a test" Riley said. Maya nodded. "Come to my place tonight. My mom still has some tests" Maya said. Riley nodded and Maya took her hands. "It'll be ok. Don't worry" Riley forced a small smile and they left the janitors closet. the same moment they saw Lucas walking at them. He looked around to make sure no one was looking before asking: "Hey, i haven't seen you all day." He asked. "Um yeah sorry I've bin busy" Riley lied. "Want to meet up at one of our spots tonight?" Lucas asked. Riley glanced at Maya who was watching from a distance. "Can we talk?" Riley asked Lucas.

Riley pulled Lucas towards the school's bleachers. There was no practice and everone has alraedy left. They were alone and Riley was glad about that. "Well this doesn't look good" Lucas said worried. Riley shook her head and they sat down. "Don't worry I'm not breaking up with you" Lucas let out a relieved sigh. "But you might after i tell you this" Riley said looking down at her hands. Lucas knitted his eyebrows together confused. Riley took a deep breath. "I'm late on my period" Lucas' breath hitched and he was shocked. "You think you're pregnant?" He asked. "I'm gonna take a test later today at Maya's." Riley explained. Lucas stared in front of him. Riley recongized his thinking face. There was a long silence between them. Suddenly Lucas got a text and her read it. He got snapped out of his thoughts and stood up. "Um i um....I have to go" He stood up and took his bag. "What you're just leaving me like this?" Riley asked standing up as well. "We'll talk about this later" Lucas said while walking down the steps. Riley felt the tears burn in her eyes. "Lucas come on!" She yelled. But he ran off the football field leaving Riley standing on the bleachers. She kicked one of the benches while some tears streamed down. She sat down and burried her head in her hands and started sobbing. Maya saw everything and slowly walked up the steps. She sat next to Riley and hit an arm around her. "It's ok, I'm here for you" Maya whispered trying to comfort Riley.

Maya walked into her bedroom with a pregnancy test in her hand. "I got one!" She ripped open the package and started reading the instructions. "I did not expect Lucas to walk away." Riley said still shocked and looking out in front of her. "He's a jerk. Every boy is a jerk when it comes to babies" Maya took the stick out o f the bag. "I guess you're right" Riley said taking the stick from Maya. "See, when it comes to boys: Maya's always right. Now go pee" Riley stood up and walked towards Maya's bathroom. "I just thought he was different you know?" Riley yelled from the bathroom. "Yeah yeah" Maya waved it off and chekced her nails while leaning against the wall. The doorbell rang and Maya went to open it. "I'll be right back" Maya yelled. "Wait! no Maya! don't leave me out here alone!" Riley yelled panicking.

Maya opened the door and widened her eyes. "What are you doing here?" She snapped angry. "Can i see Riley?" Lucas asked trying to pass but Maya crossed her arms and blocked his way. "No" She simply answered. Lucas sighed and dropped his hands beside his waist. "Look I panicked i shouldn't have ran away ok?But i need to talk to Riley about this" Lucas begged Maya. "No! I'm not letting you hurt her!" Maya snapped pissed off. "I can't believe you left me there Maya! I- Lucas" Riley was shocked when she saw her boyfriend at the door. "Riley oh my god! I'm so sorry, i panicked i shouldn'd have ran away like that. Farkle texted me and i took the oppurtunity to walk away. I 'm so sorry i shouldn't have done it, please don't leave me" Lucas begged after passing by Maya and taking Riley's hands. "Maya could you leave us alone for a few minutes?" Riley asked. Maya nodded and walked back to her room. Riley turned to Lucas. "Lucas, you running away could be the beginning of many things. Running away at sonograms, birth classes, maybe even the day itself" Lucas shook his head. "I'll never leave you. I'll always come back to you. to both of you" He took Riley's head in between his hands and looke ddeep in her eyes. "I promise" He whispered. "Lucas do you remember our first fight? This is it, this is the future arriving early. You said that you didn't want that now. Do you still think of it that way?" Riley asked. Lucas shook his head. "I'd start the future anytime with you" Lucas slwoly leaned in and pressed his lips on Riley's. It wasn't a long kiss and when they parted Riley looked down. "I don't know if I'm ready" She said feeling embaressed. Lucas lifted her chin with his fingers so she'd look into his eyes. "Together we'll be ok?" Riley nodded understanding. "Riles" Maya walked down the steps of her apartment. She was holding the small stick and handed it to Riley. Riley looked up at Lucas who was holding her hand. "Let's see if the future is here already" Lucas said. Riley nodded and lifted the stick. With sweaty hands and beating hearts they looked at the results...
