I brought back two squirrels and a rabbit scarily good at climbing trees.
Yeah. I think someone is pranking me.
Yugi had set up a tent I had brought and Tristan had started a fire, Tea boiling some water over it.
And Joey..
Well, I’m not exactly sure what Joey was trying to do with the paracord and spare stakes but I pulled him away and showed him how to hold the squirrel so its back legs were apart and instructed Tristan to use his guide book to find herbs to season the meat with.
I whipped out my knife and started to skin the first squirrel.
“Do you want to eat my meat or Tristan’s plants?” I asked when Joey turned the same color as his jacket.
I finished skinning the animals, skewered all three and had Joey and Yugi turn them.
“Tea.” I said. “Want the tails as souvenirs?”
You can guess her response and the boys laughter at her face.
I cut the rabbit in half and wrapped a squirrel and the other half of the rabbit in foil before serving the first squirrel and rabbit with a side helping of wild herbs and berries.
“I can't believe you already have five star chips, Yugi.” Tea said as we ate.
“Where did you learn to hunt, Iris?” Tristan asked, eating some of his berries.
“Our father believed that I needed to be able to keep Yugi and myself alive in the woods. Some I learned from books but the secrets my father taught me.”
Iris is the scary huntress. I was the stay at camp and set up the tents person. Yugi said with a laugh.
I laughed as well. “Remember that one time a cottonmouth almost bit you and I had to throw a machete at it?”
Yugi looked a bit uncomfortable. That was a close one. Any way, Iris was the hunter. Not me.
“You helped on trout lines.” I said. “You saw it as a game. You had to spot it before we went over it.”
Fishing and hunting are very different.
“You get food if you're successful.” I said. “That’s all that matters.”
Yugi glanced at his watch. It’s time for bed.
I stood up and brushed off my jeans. “I’m going to check on the traps.” I said, digging out a flashlight from my bag and checking to make sure my knife was secure.
Yugi gave me a worried look.
“I’ll be fine.” I said. “Now go to sleep. I’ll be back in an hour.”
I darted off into the woods and checked my snares and set a few new ones using some shoes strings I stole from Joey’s shoes.
I was going to give them back!
I reset snare that had been set off but failed to capture whatever had one it and worked on a more complicated one involving a rock and a stick.
Yes. That was sarcasm.
I went back around midnight and stoked the fire, making sure the food was high up and then climbing into my sleeping bag outside of the tent.
