Katherine’s POV
I felt the snow press together under my weight. I made sure I didn’t sit too close to Alicia so I wouldn’t scare her off. I looked over to Joe and Seth who were already talking about something. All I could see was their breath as it entered the crisp air. The faint smell of cigarettes floated through the air.
I felt all of my questions gather in my throat and form a lump. I took a deep breath and carefully processed my words. I didn’t just want to blurt out the questions; I wanted to ease in to the topic.
“What are you drawing?” I asked looking over her shoulder. I caught a quick glimpse of a detailed sketch of the old building we were being trapped in. Alicia rapidly pulled the book in to her chest.
“Nothing,” she muttered. I backed off and looked straight ahead. I dug my hands in to the pockets of my coat. I saw cars pass by the gates, not hesitating to enter. The sound of the tires racing through the slush only seemed like memories. I hadn’t heard that sound since I lived in New York.
That familiar noise was comforting. Memories of my mother taking my brother and I on walks, snow seemed to float in the air. I felt tears well up in my eyes.
“Sorry,” I mumbled snapping out of my thoughts. Silence filled the space between us.
“It’s fine,” Alicia slowly put the closed book in her lap.
“It looked good. From what I saw,” I tried to give her a compliment.
“Thanks,” Alicia began to play with the corner of her sketch book.
“Can I ask you something?” I blurted out.
Alicia looked up at me with wide eyes. I began to proceed without an ok from Alicia.
“How do you know Harry?” Alicia froze when I mentioned him.
“I-I don’t know him,” Alicia stuttered.
“It’s alright. I’ve already seen you two together. I just didn’t know you two knew each other,” I explained hoping she’d spill.
“I don’t know him that well,” Alicia said.
“Good enough to get him here to talk to you,” I tried to lighten her mood, but it didn’t work.
“I’m getting cold,” Alicia said staring at the white snow. She quickly stood up and gathered her belongings.
“Wait,” I demanded, “Please tell me,” I softened my tone. Alicia didn’t look back. She sunk her head down and walked around the building. Seth followed after her, leaving me with Joe.
I needed a plan. A plan to get Alicia to tell me every memory she has with Harry. Joe coughed as he took a seat next to me. He took a drag of his cigarette before breaking the silence.
“She isn’t someone who will just open up,” he tried to blow the smoke away from me.
“How long has she been in here?” I couldn’t help myself.
“A few months. Doctor isn’t allowed to tell us things like that,” Joe explained. I nodded, wanting quite.
My head rose when I saw a car starting its way down the long lane way. My hard facial expressions soften when I saw the car. The sleek black Camaro glided over the snow. It disappeared as it pulled in front of the building.
My heart dropped as I heard the car door slam shut.
“I think we should go inside,” my voice creaked as I stood from the snow covered table. Joe flicked what he had left of a smoke and followed me as I turned the corner.
I just caught a glimpse of his blonde locks as he sauntered in to the hospital. I took a deep breath before walking through the doors.
“Hi I’m Kyle Summers, I’m here to see Katherine,” Kyle said to Audrey the nurse. Audrey smiled and looked over Kyle’s shoulder straight at me. Kyle turned, and immediately a smile covered his face. I wish I could say I shared the same expression.
“Hi,” Kyle said as I took off my coat. I stayed quiet and walked passed him. His footsteps followed me to my room.
“How did you know I was here?” I asked as I hung my coat on the back of the chair.
“Your dad told me,” he cleared his throat, “I’m really sorry.”
“About what?” I just wanted to hear him say it.
“I didn’t kiss her , but I’m sorry for being involved. You have to know if I got to choose who I kissed that night it would have been you,” for some reason when Kyle said that, that was just what I needed to hear.
All of the walls I’ve built up the past few days crumbled down. I felt the tears that had disappeared earlier return and I had a feeling they weren’t going to go away again.
Before I knew it I sprung myself at Kyle. He bent down slightly and picked me up off the ground as I wrapped my arms around him. I buried my face in to the nape of his neck and let the tears fall. His grip tightened as my tears fell on to his hot skin.
