Because life just hits you hard, when you're at the most exciting moments of your life.

Steve swears under his breath repeatedly. Eyebags were packed underneath his eyes and his blue orbs looked as if he had cried and cried for days, days on end; tears never failing to rush - pour. His palms turned soft and velvety because of how much he had sweat.

His lips trembled, not a proper word or sentence managed to come out of his mouth. Not ever since the news. He just couldn't believe why it happened, or how it happened. It all happened so terrifyingly quickly. In all matters, that was the most scariest part.

Riiiiing. Riiiiiing. Riiiiing.

The sound made an echo throughout the hallways of the hospital. Steve didn't even bother to pick his phone up. He didn't want to.

Tony, who had been there while Pepper was at the Rogers' residence, taking care of Natasha and Steve's child, James, picked up his cell and answered. No doubt, it was his fiancée, Pepper.

"Babe?" Tony half-whispered, half-talked through Steve's mobile. He could make out the cries of James on the other side and Pepper trying her best to calm him down. She was cooing and whispering soft words as James cried and cried and cried.

Few seconds later, Pepper finally responded. "Oh, Tony.. Is Steve still pretty shaken up?" The genius billionaire inhaled a breath sharply and replied, "Yeah, he's pretty shaken up. How are you, you and James?"

"James misses his parents. I can tell. But Laura and I are trying our best to calm him down," Pepper reassures Tony. The least he wanted was stress and pressure about James.

Tony shook his head and nodded. "Okay, okay. Nat is still in the incubator. The cancer is spreading and they're trying their best to get rid of it. I'll call you in a few, alright?"

"Okay," Pepper says through the phone. "Love you,"

Tony dismisses the call and returns back to his fellow friend and avenger, Steve.

Steve looked up, despite fighting the urge to. He didn't want to look at anyone. Not even his own wife who was currently dying in a room full of drugs and doctors.

"It was Pepper. James wants you but, um, they have it under control," Tony chuckles nervously at the end, which to Steve's response was only a nod of the head.

They sit in silence together, not wanting to create an awkward atmosphere.

It was only just the two of them. Clint was supposed to come but, I guess the news of his own best friend dying made him think otherwise. Thor was in Asgard and Bruce - he had to support Betty while she was in labor.

The two men who had fought against in each other in the Civil War years ago were now here, sitting side by side with silence thickening between them.

Tony had the urge to say something but, he just couldn't get around to it. He didn't want to make the Captain feel more pain and sorrow in himself.

And for the next four hours, he sat there for support. Occasionally soothing him while he cried and cried.

Those hours felt hopeless and amidst, scary. As the clock ticked-tocked on, the only solution was for patience.

The news broke out sooner than expected.

Natasha was chemo and cancer free.

They all were told she had a maximum of three months to live.

But here they were, celebrating her fourth month of life and with her family.

A/N : I tried to kill Nat off but, it just couldn't omgjgjghg. She's such a bad ass and she would've fought till the end until she was cancer free. So yeah, if i triggered any of you, I'm sorry. I was just basing this one-shot off a song :") thought it would be a fun little experiment. But yeah, more happy one-shots to come! Love, ree.
