"For the last time, I will not wear that stupid costume." Natasha narrowed her eyes, looking menacing as ever. She then proceeded to angrily grab a bag of chips from the pantry to end this conversation.
Steve huffed, pursing his lips in frustration. It's been three days, and all he's managed to do is unsuccessfully convince Natasha to match with him for the Halloween party.
Usually, the Captain didn't care about these kinds of parties. He would show up to them if invited, don't get him wrong. But, there was one year Tony threw a Gatsby-themed party, and he was the only one who showed up in a plain black suit and tie.
Simply put, Steve wasn't much of a costume guy himself. Even back in his time, the fact that one could dress up as anything but human and go dancing at the local bar did not excite him.
However, he thought this party was the perfect chance for him and Natasha to publicly debut as a couple. And to prove to their friends that they, in fact, have been dating this entire time.
"Nat, please. I think you're overreacting," Steve rushed over to Natasha before she could storm out of the kitchen altogether.
The Black Widow knitted her eyebrows, looking seriously annoyed. Steve has been awfully persistent, albeit polite. But, this was unbearable. On the one hand, she hated disappointing him. But it was maddening having to listen to him sneak in the costume topic every now and then.
"Me, overreacting? I'm being completely rational." The redhead crossed her arms while clutching on the bag of Lays with her left hand. "I hate costumes, sometimes including my field uniform. You, of all people, should know that. So, nothing will change my mind, not even your incessant begging."
Steve pouted, "Well, I hate costumes too."
Natasha rolled her eyes, "I'm all about letting our relationship out in the open. But do we really need to do that, in those?"
The former spy pointed to their outfits. Hers was a purple, 60s-inspired, long-sleeved dress, matched with light pink stockings, a green scarf and a purple headband. The very thought of wearing such vibrant colours made her nauseous.
"I thought we'd look cute in that. We basically match the characters, well, appearance-wise anyway." Steve scratched the back of his head and chuckled nervously.
Natasha shook her head. "You can keep convincing me, but it's not gonna work. Now, if you excuse me, I'm gonna go work out."
Steve didn't bother bringing up the topic that night. And he felt more defeated than ever.

Everyone the Avengers knew was in attendance at the Halloween party. Even the Guardians took a night off so they could have an excuse to visit Earth. Carol Danvers, in her 80s-inspired aerobics outfit, also paid a quick visit to have some drinks.
