Rixton

"Rixton wake up." Amelia's voice cuts through Rixton's sleep. He blinks open his eyes to see his sister leaning over him.

"What do you want?" Rixton moans then rolls over.

"The reading is in an hour. You need to get dressed." Amelia says. She sits down on the bed and pokes Rixton in the back.

Rixton rolls over and glares at her. "Can't I just go in my pj's?"

"No. Now get up, or I will pour this cup of water on your head." Amelia says holding up a glass of water.

Rixton jumps out of bed and points a finger at her. "Don't you dare!"

Amelia rolls her eyes. "Then get dressed."

"Fine. Get out of my room." Rixton nods to the door.

Amelia stands up. "I'll just leave this here just in case you get thirsty." She sets the cup on the bedside table then leaves the room.

Rixton changes into jeans and a tee-shirt. He pulls on his boots and is just finishing tying the laces when there is a pounding on his door.

"Hurry up." Amelia calls out.

Rixton opens the door and frowns at his sister. "It'll only take five minutes to get downtown to Gregg's office."

"But we only have three minutes to get there." Amelia argues back. She starts walking down the hall, not even bothering to see if Rixton is following.

"Then we better walk fast." Rixton says catching up to her. On their way downstairs they pass Jackson and Mason. They each carry a plateful of food.

"Don't eat all of our food." Amelia warns.

"This is my first plate of food and his last." Mason promises.

As soon as they get outside, Rixton wishes he was back inside. The sun glares down at them, and a warm breeze blows through the trees. Rixton's shirt starts to get wet with sweat before they even make it to the end of their street. Sticking to the shade as much as possible, they make it to their father's lawyer's office with a minute to spare. Before they go inside Amelia turns around and stops Rixton.

"What?" Rixton demands.

"Are you going to behave today?" Amelia asks.

"What am I? Four?" Rixton demands. Amelia opens her mouth but before she can respond he adds. "Yes I will behave. I will shed my jerkish attitude, and stop pretending that I don't care that my dad is dead. Okay?"

Amelia nods her head in approval. "Good. Now let's go inside and get out of this heat."
