Rixton
"I should be asking you that." Rixton says calmly.
James glances down at the files he holds then back up to Rixton. "You already know the answer, don't you?"
Rixton glances at the globe that sits on the desk. "Yeah. Heard your whole conversation. When I saw that you were missing I came to find you. Didn't expect to hear what I did."
"Yeah, well you should have. Considering what you've done." James says venom dripping in his voice.
"I'm going to assume that all those times you've disappeared these last few months was because you were meeting with whoever was on the phone." Rixton says looking back at James.
"You made out with my girlfriend behind my back." James snaps.
"Yeah, well at least I wasn't lying about if for months." Rixton says standing up. "Who the hell were you talking to anyway?"
"Lena." James says.
"Who?" Rixton asks confused.
James looks at a painting on the wall. "The crime boss of Houston."
"What does she want?" Rixton shoves his hands in his pockets.
"She knows how to get information on where Lily is." James says, looking back at Rixton.
"And what does she want in return for this information?" Rixton asks.
"At first she wanted to gold, but when I told her we lost it she asked for your company." James looks at the ground. "I told her there was no way I could persuade you to give it to her, so instead I agreed to give her client information and 1,000 chips each month."
"That's not what you told her on the phone." Rixton states.
"I changed my mind." James says looking back up at him.
"You told her you were going to work for her. You said you were leaving." Rixton says.
James nods his head. "I can't stay here and watch you two together every day. I can't stay and work with someone who stabbed me in the back."
"Why didn't you tell me any of this?" Rixton demands, suddenly angry. "Why didn't you ask for help?"
"Because it wasn't your problem. It was mine." James snaps.
Rixton shakes his head. "I'm supposed to be the one who does things without telling the others. I'm supposed to be the impulsive one, not you. That's why we work so well together. We balance each other out."
"Yeah, until you ruined it." James says, venom saturating his words.
"Until I ruined it?" Rixton scoffs. "You started this by lying to me."
"No, all I did was act like you. You started this by stealing Alice from me." James counters.
Throughout their argument that had been slowly getting closer to each other. Now they stand face to face, only a foot of space separates them.
"Quit referring to Alice like she's a toy." Rixton snaps.
"Like you care." James scoffs. Before Rixton can say anything he continues. "You don't care about anyone but yourself. Like I told Alice, you don't love. You can't love. What makes you think you can be in a relationship with her? You've never been in one in your life. Hell, you slept with a prostitute. What would she think of you if she found out?"
"That was one time." Rixton says, barley keeping a grip on his temper.
"Face it Rixton. You're a self-centered, arrogant, and heartless jerk. And you're going to break her heart." James says coldly.
Rixton shakes his head. James words cut deeper than he cares to admit. "I'm not—"
"Do you regret it?" James asks cutting him off.
"Do I regret what?" Rixton asks, James question catching him by surprise.
"Sleeping with her, knowing now that you lost me?" James asks.
Rixton stares at him, not sure how to answer. Before her gets a chance James walks out of the room, leaving him alone. He sits down in one of the chairs and puts his head in his hands. In a few short minutes, he's managed to lose his closest friend. Now he has to figure out what to do next.
Rixton doesn't know how long he's been sitting when someone knocks on the office door. He looks up to see Alice standing in the doorway.
"You okay." She asks, concern clear in her voice.
"Yeah." Rixton says nodding his head. He sets his drink on the desk and stands up.
"Where's James?" She asks looking past him and into the office.
"He went to bed." Rixton answers as he walks up to her. It's not a lie, it's just not the whole truth either.
Alice seems to believe him. "The others went to bed too. That's where I'm headed. I just wanted to check on you." She says.
Without thinking Rixton leans down and kisses her. She stiffens in surprise, but soon relaxes. Her lips open under the pressure of his and he kisses her harder. He wraps one arm around her, pulling her closer to him. His other hand goes into her hair. She rests her hands against his chest, balling up his shirt in her fists.
Alice is the first to break away. "You sure you're okay?"
"Yeah. Just tired." Rixton says. He takes Alice's hand and leads her to the stairs.
"Where are we going?" She asks.
Rixton glances back at her. "To bed."
Alice follows him up the stairs without protest. "Together?"
"Yeah." Rixton says nodding his head.
