"Maxon, have you seen my gloves anywhere?" America called out from her closet. She dug around through her clothes for a few more minutes before giving up with a loud huff. She couldn't seem to find her silk gloves for the life of her, and the annual Halloween Ball was only a couple hours away.

"What's that, darling?" Maxon's golden head of hair popped inside the doorway, his bright smile following close behind. "Did you loose another pair of shoes?"

"No, not this time," America smiled, letting out a small chuckle. "I just can't find my gloves. Remember, the silk ones that used to be your mother's?"

Maxon leaned against the doorframe and smiled sadly. "How could I forget?"

"Yes, well, have you seen them?" America asked, standing up and walking over to her husband. She was about to wrap her arms around him, but his hands suddenly flew up from behind his back and hovered over his head. Clutched in between his fingers were a small, silk pair of gloves.

"You mean, have I seen these?" Maxon teased, waving his hands above America's head playfully.

"You little sneak!" America glared at him. She was trying hard to keep a straight face, but failing. A few giggles escaped her lips as she reached for the gloves desperately. Maxon was so much taller than her, and she knew her attempts were absolutely useless.

"Maxon," she whined. Her bottom lip stick out and she crossed her arms over her chest. "Give them back."

"Only if you say the magic words." Maxon's eyes twinkled and his smile lit up his whole face. All America wanted to do was cuddle him in her arms, but then she remembered how annoying he was being. She rolled her eyes in exasperation and let her arms fall to her sides.

"Maxon, I'm not a child," she said.

"Oh really?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "Then why, my dearest America, are you acting like one?"

"First of all, that's rude," America said, grabbing a fistful of Maxon's shirt and pulling him down so their faces were just inches apart. "Secondly, I am not your dear."

They stood there for a long couple seconds, their faces emotionless and their eyebrows downcast. But suddenly, out of nowhere, Maxon burst into laughter. He leaned forward and gave his wife a quick kiss before placing the gloves in her hands.

"You never tire of being stubborn, do you?" He chuckled and walked out of the closet.

"Where are you going?" America called, too stunned to move. "I though we were in the middle of an argument!"

"Yes dear, whatever you say," Maxon laughed, his voice carrying from the other side of the room. "But don't you have a party to get ready for?"

"The party!" Her eyes widened and her mind immediately went in a thousand different directions. She still needed to get her costume, talk to the kitchen staff, pick out a finishing song, check on Eadlyn, go over the guest list one last time, check on Osten, make sure her mother had gotten there safely, help out with the...

The Halloween Ball was running as well as it always did, and America was feeling thoroughly proud of herself. She'd done her duty as Queen and visited with almost every guest in the room. Of course, she was absolutely exhausted. The seemingly endless weeks of planning and preparation were catching up to her, and all she wanted now was to sit down and catch her breath.

"Ah, there you are," said a voice from behind. "I've been looking everywhere for you."

America spun around and smiled when she saw a pair of familiar bright blue eyes staring back at her.

"Maxon," she breathed. All night she hadn't been able to see him, and now that she wasn't busy, she was able to admire his extremely handsome costume. He was dressed as a soldier, and his uniform made him look taller and more authoritative than he usually did. His blonde hair was hidden underneath a camouflaged cap, and he had an afternoon layer of stubble across his upper lip and jawline.

"You clean up nice," she giggled, admiring every inch of him and his costume.

"I'm glad my appearance is to your liking, Miss America," he said, his smile widening. "Honestly though, no one can compare to your magnificent beauty tonight."

"Oh Maxon, stop," America protested, blushing in spite of herself. "It's just a few things my maids put together for me. It's nothing, really."

"America, you've got to be joking," he said in disbelief. "You're stunning. I couldn't keep my eyes off you all night."

The suddenly bashful Queen wanted to protest, but no words could escape her. She looked down at her costume and tried to find what made her so appealing. She was supposed to take on the appearance of fire, since her hair was red as well as her personality. She was wearing a bright red dress that faded into yellow as it hit the floor, and it's single sleeve wrapped around her arm snugly. Her hair was done up in a wild way, with her crown on her head to top it off. Overall, it looked pretty good.

"Darling, please come dance with me," Maxon asked, snapping his wife out of her thoughts. He held out his arm to her, and she took it without hesitation.

As they made their way to the middle of the dance floor, America's mind flashed back to the first Halloween she'd ever had. It was the night she'd realized she was in love with Maxon, and she remembered it as if she were there again. Almost nothing had changed, except for the fact that there weren't a handful of other girls competing for a chance to dance with the Prince.

King Maxon and Queen America danced all night long, with no interruptions of any sort. They shared memories that made them laugh, and others that brought tears to their eyes. They'd gone through more together than they could ever know, and they finally had a night just for themselves.

It was almost as if time had stopped just for them.
