Erik's POV
I know my hands are shaking because, well, they look like they are. Or is that my whole body? I don't even know anymore, I'm so terrified. I shouldn't even be doing this. I'm not part of the Selction, so I literally have no right to ask this of Eadlyn. Even if I were part of the Selection, she'd be asking, not me.

As I stand outside her door, I reach into my pocket. Yes, it's still there. My fingers brush over the velvety fabric, calming me to a small degree. If only I could be as strong as she was. If I were, nothing would be able to get to me. I'd never be afraid, and the world would open up with absolute possibility.

But then I remember who I am. I'm Eikko, the boy who was too afraid to put his name in the drawing and regretted it every day since. He's the one who's fallen in love with a forbidden lover.

Oh gosh Erik, what have you gotten yourself into?

I don't know what I should do. There's a door in front of me, and behind that door is the girl who holds my heart. Then there's the stairway behind me, urging me to let all of my fantasies go and just live a normal, easy life.

But I don't want a normal life. I want a happy one. What I want is to wake up every morning and know that someone loves me, and that that someone is lying beside me and never going to leave. I want love.

I want Eadlyn.

Before my brain has time to register what my hand is doing, I step forward and knock. My shaky hand clanks against the door like a hammer to a nail. Suddenly I realize that Eadlyn might not say yes. What if she says no? I'll be absolutely humiliated.

No. You can't go through life wondering if she would've said yes or if she would've said no. You're going to do this, Erik, and you're going to do it now.

Suddenly, the door opened. I could feel the breath catch in my throat and the world spinning out of control.

She answered she answered sheanswered sheanswered sheansweredsheanswered.

"Erik?" She smiled. Oh, why did she have to go and do a stupid thing like that?

"Oh, yes," I murmured. "Hello."

"What are you doing here?" She asked, crossing her arms across her chest.

"I was, well, I mean, uh..." My mind was reeling in a million directions. Oh, I was just stopping by to see if you'd maybe like to spend the rest of your life with me, you know? I thought it'd be kind of fun.

Eadlyn squinted at me, amused. "Would you like to step inside?" She prompted, raising an eyebrow curiously.

"Yes, that would be best," I said, nodding my head up and down.

"Alright, well, come on in," she grinned before grabbing my hand and pulling me through the doorway. Her touch sent an electric shock through my arm, and I couldn't help but think that this was where it was always meant to be, holding the hand of the most powerful woman in the country.

"Here, make yourself comfortable," Eadlyn said, grabbing a few pillows from her bed and throwing them onto a small, cushioned bench by the window. She sat down and patted the spot beside her, which I happily accepted.

"Alright, now can you tell me what you need?" She turned so we were facing each other, and I hoped my blush wasn't too noticeable. We were so close. The only other time we had been this close was when we'd almost kissed. That was the day I gave her my ring.

"Of course," I cleared my throat. How do you start a declaration of love? "I've been meaning to tell you something for a while now, but I never really had the courage to."
