Darwin Lewis

Darwin Lewis had frequent nightmares, usually four times a week. And tonight was no exception.

The cold snow was peppered on the ground. Glittering snowflakes swirled in the mid-winter wind. It was a peaceful scene that Darwin Lewis knew all too well. Soon, like in all his nightmares, a huge demonic figure would appear and tear everything apart, just like usual.

Darwin held a short blade in hand, like he normally did. During his recurring nightmares, he was supposed to 'fight' the demon. Normally, he killed it by throwing the knife, and impaling it. Then he would simply wake up. He always won; it was too easy.

Thunder boomed, putting the demon right on cue. Usually, it would appear out of nowhere and would try to attack Darwin. The thunder continued to roll mysteriously. A never ending clash lit up the sky. The lighting froze, leaving a split down the pale blue canvas.

"What the-" Darwin said. Lightning was not a normal visitor of his nightmares. His heart skipped a beat as he saw his two family members appear in front of him, the snow melting under their feet. Darwin lived only with his sister and father. At first glance, Darwin automatically knew something wasn't right.

Darwin's sister had broken limbs and twisted ankles. Darwin realized that she was not standing, but floating inches off the ground above the melted snow, weightless. Her neck hung and blood dripped from her face.
Beside her, Darwin's father had bruised wrists that had been sliced many times. A blank expression matched his bleeding eyes. The huge crack of pale lightning still hung in the sky as if time was frozen.

As if all had stopped.

Darwin screamed with tears threatening to pour from his eyes. Horrified, he dropped the short knife which left an indention in the snow. The blood gushing from his family stained the crystal snow around them. He shook his head as he finally realized what controlled him in this particular nightmare. Darwin knew that this was not real, but the voice in his head was yelling loud and clear.

You're afraid, Darwin. It taunted him. Darwin knew this voice very well, and it was not uncommon to him.
You feel it. You're frozen and paralyzed with Fear.
Although Fear was not the strongest of Darwins' Demons, it was his scariest. With its deep tone, the Demon sent stabbing images into Darwin's head.

And now, as he stood watching his family bleed on the snow, Fear made itself heard.

The bruised bodies of Darwin's family members melted into the snow with their blood. Darwin watched in horror as this true nightmare continued before his eyes.
Dark clouds swirled the winter sky as the lighting continued to cut the sky. The claps of thunder rolled on as the chaos around Darwin mounted.
The snow pelted down like thick, cold rain. It covered his ankles, keeping him still. He screamed again covering his ears as the deafening thunder exploded. He squinted through the snow at the strike of lighting.

Finally, it began to move, splitting the sky open. Violently, it ripped open the faded blue heavens revealing the piercing red eyes of Fear.
Oh Darwin, it mocked, there's nothing to fear but Fear itself. The demon cackled.
You cannot escape Us now!
The rip in the sky exploded and Fear disappeared
A final clap of thunder echoed in Darwins' ears. He opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out. A final crack of lighting struck Darwin, shocking his body.
