Next day I woke up with a severe headache. Bracing myself with walls, I made my way downstairs. I spent some time on the lawn and had breakfast later. After that, I came back to my room and spent the whole day lying on the bed or sitting on the chair, doing absolutely nothing. When night finally fell, I decided to write my journal.
Dear Diary,
After fighting an internal battle which wasn't more than a minute long, I decided to go to the party. It was crazy.
I'm still dizzy, though it's been a whole night and day since.
The soberness was supposed to be over by now. Wasn't it?
And about that Char guy. How dare he! Why did he invite me in the first place, if he just had to reveal the news to me? I used to think his stares from far away in the corridor and his concerning looks when he talked were genuine. It was as if he really wanted to help a crazy person as me. But no, it was either because he was pitying me or because he and Axan had something planned.
Among all the uncertainties, there was one thing I was sure about, Char sure was hiding something if not a lot of things.
Between all this craziness, I hope I find my proper place in the world soon. I've no idea what I'm doing or where I'm heading. I'm supposed to be cruel and evil and feel nothing but I do. I feel and I get sad. I'm not even sure what I truly want and that makes it all the more melancholy.
Thursday,
13th November.
I had nothing else to do so I put the diary away, made my bed and went to sleep.
...
"Venessa, stop!" I screamed after Venessa who was running around the sofas holding my dolls.
"I won't," she laughed and ran to the kitchen before I could get to her.
"Daddy!" I shouted to call my Dad rather than going after her. He didn't arrive at my first call so I went looking for him passing our bags placed near the door on my way to the backyard.
We were going on a trip to Malaysia and Dad was probably checking all the doors and placing the outdoor decors in the storeroom.
Before I reached the door to the backyard, he came in through it wearing a black suit looking very handsome as always. After locking the door, he said, "Don't tell me you two have been fighting,"
"I swear I haven't been. Venessa is!" I said trying to look innocent, he laughed and picked me up and placed me on his shoulder. My frock flowed freely as he ran in the lounge trying to sound like a plane. We both laughed so much and I completely forgot about the dolls.
Realizing that I no longer had any interest in running after her, Venessa came out of the kitchen too. She carelessly put the dolls on the sofa and stood near Dad and me as we waited for Mom to come down.
"Ladies and their makeups," Dad said while shaking his head with a smile on his face. Everybody knew how much he loved Mom. He put me down and made his way upstairs to check on Mom.
He wasn't even halfway up when we all heard painful and heart wrenching screams of Mom. Dad stopped for a second, then ran to his bedroom quickly from where the screams had sounded from. Venessa and I ran too, scared out of wits for we had never heard such voices hitherto.
Dad's figure blocked our sight when we reached his room's door but we were able to sneak in the room by the little space on his sides and what I saw in front of me made me gasp loudly.
Words were written from blood on the wall,
"YOuR DAughTERS
ArE NeXT"
But that wasn't all; life had much more for me. My mother was lying on the floor drenched in the pool of her own blood, a visible gash in her stomach.
The pool around her corpse widened by the second. Mom's eyes were wide open as if she was still registering the shock of the intruder when she was attacked.
While registering the details, I felt no pain, no feeling of loss, nothing. It was almost as if the world around me had stopped moving.
Suddenly, I felt everything coming to life as I heard Venessa's sobs and Dad's loud and hasty voice on his phone. That's when I lost it too and screamed from fear, from the pain of it.
"Mom!" I exclaimed sitting up.
I looked around me, I was in my room. Instantly I travelled from that moment of twelve years back to the present.
"A nightmare. Just a nightmare," I tried to calm myself. This wasn't just a nightmare but was a revival of past. Exact scenario of her death had reeled before my eyes again.
I quickly got up and went to the study table where I had placed the water jug. After drinking the water, I made my way to the bed again.
"Why do the nightmares have to roll in as if the memories aren't brutal enough," I complained to no one in particular.
The nightmare had left me in sweats but I pulled the duvet over me again and tried to embrace the sleep. Maybe this time I would dream of wonderland where I'd finally meet my family.
Not a minute would have passed when someone knocked on the door. The little calmness that had finally enveloped me waned away as all the horrible thoughts made their way to my mind. The thoughts of the murderers, the man behind everything and the scenarios of the murders.
Someone knocked again. This time instead of cowering under the blankets in a corner, with shaky legs I got up from the bed. When I neared the door, I placed my ear on it and attempted to listen to something from the other side.
When I failed, with a heavy heart, I pulled open the door ready to face my fate.
