Logan

The rest of the party passed in the usual blur of people and jostling for position.

I was looking for Lindsay and Kyler as the party started to wind down when a familiar face stopped me.

"Hi, Logan," Raney greeted with a smile, giving me a hearty slap on the back. I had to brace myself to keep from stumbling forward, but I didn't mind.

Raney was one of the few genuinely nice people at these things and I really liked him.

"Hi, how are you doing?" I asked warmly.

"Good, good. But I hear congratulations are in order. Kyler picked up your script?"

"Wow. Word gets around fast," I said.

I didn't know how I felt about that.

"Well, I got it straight from the horse's mouth," he reassured me. "He's actually sending it over for me to take a look at tomorrow. No guarantees, of course, and my schedule is still up in the air for the next year, but I'm excited to read it."

Kyler moved fast.

"I hope you like it. Even if you don't end up working on it."

"I'm sure I will." His jovial face closed down a little as he looked around and leaned in closer. "Also, just between us, I'd watch myself around Lindsay. Not that you'll be her assistant for much longer, but get out as soon as you can."

Someone else called him over.

"Excuse me, I've been trying to talk to that guy for weeks," he said, disappearing into the crowd.

Leaving me frowning.

What had she done that had made someone I only knew tangentially take the time and make the effort to give me a warning?

I was still preoccupied with that thought when Lindsay and Kyler caught up with me, giving me the signal it was time to leave.

Lindsay was giving me a weird look, but I didn't dwell on it.

There was no point. If she wanted to say something, she would.

If she didn't she wouldn't.

I'd found that confronting her directly usually only made things worse if she was in a mood.

When we got back in the car, the conversation was a little stilted in the back between Kyler and Lindsay.

Not that it was particularly surprising considering the read I kept getting on him, but it sure didn't make the ride any less uncomfortable.

When we got out at Lindsay's place, Kyler stopped me before I could fade away unnoticed like I'd been planning to do.

"Hold on, please." He turned to Lindsay. "I had a great time, thank you for inviting me."

"Of course," Lindsay said with a smile.

Did it seem a little more forced than usual?

"I just want to discuss something with Logan before I leave, if that's alright with you."

"Please- you don't need my permission." With a quick nod at him and an indecipherable glance at me, she swept into the house.

Weird vibes.

Most definitely.

"Do you want to come out back with me?" I asked.

"Yes, if it's not too much trouble," he said with a softer, more sincere smile than the one he'd given Lindsay.
