Neville Longbottom POV

I listened in awe to my new friend. One of my only friends, too. It wasn't NORMAL, a Slytherin talking to a Hufflepuff, but the guy seemed nice enough. Eventually we reached the Hufflepuff common room entrance. 'Um, bye, Harry,' I muttered, praying that Seamus, my only proper friend in this place, wouldn't hear, but it was too late. 'Harry? Harry who?' Seamus called, stumbling out of the common room. He stared at me and Harry in disbelief. I didn't know what to do.

'Um, Seamus, meet my new friend, Harry Malfoy,' I stammered. Seamus blanched. 'A MALFOY?!' he murmured in my ear. Harry looked uncomfortable, and I had a nasty feeling he'd heard. 'Anyway, Neville, you promised Darcy Verita you'd play chess with her today,' Seamus said loudly. Darcy Verita?! The most gorgeous girl in Hufflepuff, who I have categorized as 'Total Pain'?! I could tell he had news on the Philosophers Stone, which he and I were secretly investigating, so I waved miserably to Harry and followed him to the empty common room.

Harry Malfoy POV

I pressed my ear to the wall to catch what Seamus and Neville were saying-I only did it because I was scared Neville might be a two-faced coward who'd be horrible about me to Finnigan.

'Snape wants to steal the Stone,' Seamus confirmed. I heard him whisper something to Neville. The Stone?! What were they talking about?

'It could be Quirrell,' Neville replied. 'If anyone in this school's suspicious, it's him.'

'Nah, it's Snape.'

'How do you know?'

I heard Seamus lower his voice. The only word I managed to understand was 'because.'

'We'll have to follow him,' Neville said.

'Tomorrow?'

'Yup. Same time, same place.'

Then I heard the slap of a high five and the floorboards creak. Then silence.
