Katherine's POV
At 11:00, my shift is over and I'm called to go home. The only problem is, I have no home to go to. This wouldn't have to be an issue if Jenna was out of the picture, as she promised us all months ago. I can't stand the jealousy I've been feeling all night, but I know she's with David and that happens to get in the way of me being with him. I just don't want him thinking that I didn't enjoy night, and now he feels the need to rush to anyone else giving him attention. I did enjoy last night, but it would hurt the both of us if I admitted that.
I get in my car, regretting that I told David I had a place to stay. I hate sleeping in hotels, especially alone, and all I'll do if I go to one is think about when David and I would stay in hotels. This is why I wanted to get away and start over, because he was all I thought about. But now that he's here, it's even worse and I don't see it going away.
After driving around the small town for ten minutes, I end up in the parking lot of David's apartment complex. I rest my face against the steering wheel for a while before getting enough courage to walk inside. I need to see him again, and I need to know there's nothing going on between him and Jenna.
As the automatic slide in doors open for me, there's only one person in the lobby. A man dressed in dark leather waits by the elevator, but it doesn't seem like he's in a hurry. In fact, it doesn't even seem like he's waiting for it to open for him. Instead, his hands meet the metal doors and he tries parting the doors open.
"It isn't opening." A familiar husky voice is released from his lips and my heart stops.
A muffled sound comes from the other side of the door and the man in the leather continues sliding his hands against the door. I walk closer to get a better look and stop in my tracks as the man turns around to face me.
"Katherine." He grins. My heart sinks; I don't have the energy for whatever excuse he has for being here this late. "You guys didn't tell me we would be having a reunion!" He bangs on the elevator door.
My confusion is cut short when I realize someone is stuck on the other side of the elevator. "Katherine?" David's muffled voice shouts from behind the metal door.
"David! What the hell are you doing? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Why are you here? I mean... how are you here?" His voice grows louder as I step closer.
"I had to..." I stop myself from further embarrassment. "Nothing. Are you really stuck?"
"Well we aren't standing here voluntarily." Another muffled voice groans from behind the shut doors. Jenna.
"How long have you been in there?" I'm hoping David answers this time.
"Half an hour." He replies. Ian continues staring at me and I stand impatiently, wishing the door would just open.
"Okay, I have an idea." Ian speaks up.
"See! I told you he would." I hear Jenna squeal and I smile to myself. Somewhere deep inside of her is the same excited Jenna that I once knew.
"Okay, Katherine. I'm going to need your help." Ian holds a hand out to me and I study it. It doesn't shake or quiver at all; he's as still and hard as a robot and always seems to be where he shouldn't be. I begin wondering how he even got here but if I ask then he'll just reciprocate the same question to me, and I can't admit to David that I wanted to be with him.
"Just tell me what I need to do." I watch him return his open hand back to his side and he nods his head towards the closed doors.
"Okay." His hands find my hips and I flinch, jumping a mere two inches away from him. "Relax." His eyes go wide and I think he realizes how afraid I am of him still. "Just keep both hands on the door at all times. I'm going to get something out of my car and I'll be right back." He tells me and paces out of the building.
