I lay in bed too alert to go to sleep but too tired to stay awake. I process what Rubi has just said to me. I think about nothingness, and more nothingness. Eventually my body gives in and I float off to a dark, ominous sleep.
I dreamed of the night sky that seemed to be getting closer and closer to me. Bundles of galaxies huddle together in corners of my vision. Spiralling around and around. Tiny stars start to appear and small purple and red details flick across the sky. I relax into the image and feel in control of my dream.
A new picture comes on screen and the atmosphere changes. Instead of light twinkling stars, spiralling swirls of galaxies and a never ending universe, where the impossible feels achievable. The stars turn a violent shade of fiery red and there is a bright yellow glow over the image. Much like a fire. A comet, covered in burning gas and blue flames licked over the surface. I could feel the radiation, I could feel the heat. It was burning my face, my hair. My eyeballs stang and I tried to get away. I thrashed out trying to push it away as it got closer to my body but my hands didn't make contact with an object. I was terrified. This impenetrable force was coming closer, closer, closer.
My body was trembling with the force that was vibrating around the atmosphere. The sky had gone completely orange now and I could smell the burning scent that travelled with the comet. I could hear voices, screaming, shouting. My body was moving even more now, as if a violent earthquake had hit the Empire State Building and I was up the top.
Eventually I couldn't take it anymore. The noise, the voices and the heat. It felt as if the flames had licked across my body leaving harsh burn marks and my clothes covered in charcoal. I thrashed around and wok up with a start.
I rubbed my eyes to check if I was still dreaming but Rubi was stood over my bed yelling at me. The same word over and over.
FIRE!
I suddenly understood. I ran out of the room and down the hallway. I looked up the stairwell and saw fire spreading on the walls. The smoke was chocking me. Clogging up my throat. I started to cough, hard, thick and raspy. I swam through the smoke and felt dizzy with confusion. I suddenly stopped and started coughing. I am asthmatic, it's not my fault.
Rubi gave me a huge push and I continued to stumble through the building. I could barely see the door. My vision was cloudy and the corners of my eyes were black. I saw a prick of light and ran towards it with all my strength. I fell through a delicate material which I distinguished as glass and breathed in the cold night air. A faint taste of smoke still lingered in my mouth but I was out of the building. I picked myself up and heard a loud "OUMPH" behind me.
"Rubi, is that you?"
"Hanna, oh thank god you're okay!" I helped her up and she guided me towards the group. My vision was coming back and I could see the remains of the building crumbling down. I looked around and saw the terrified faces of my fellow peers. My legs gave way and I thumped on the ground. My final image was Rubi, Nutmeg, Felix and Peter bent over me.
Then I was engulfed by the darkness.
