The difference between a coincident and fate is so small that we might not see it. Some believe that our world is just a big group of coincidents put together. Some people rather likes to believe that everything is destined to happen, that it is something bigger that makes our path. I like to believe in both. For example, it may be a coincident that the age gap between me and my niece Riley is no more than three years. But I believe that it was destined that her best friend turned out to be Maya Penelope Hart.

It was a coincident that she saw me that night, fate that I followed her outside afterwards.

I consider myself a smart guy, not a genius but I at least think that I can make rational decisions but still be a social guy. I'm not extraordinary and I have never seen myself like a superhero or something like that. Maybe that was the reason that it was so amazing to meet Maya, to feel special by her attention, to feel important. Sadly, the feeling of being special leads to feeling of being powerful. Being powerful makes you feel like you can do whatever you want, even though it hurts the people that make you powerful.

The first day I met Maya Hart was not that day she was in my brother's apartment that Christmas evening. It was when I was nine and she was six. I was visiting my brother Cory with my parents. I didn't know what to expect when I met Riley's best friend for the first time. I was not that into girls at that age, I mostly just thought they were disgusting. At least I thought so until I saw the blue eyes of hers, curtained by curly blond hair. She was the prettiest girl I had ever seen. She didn't care that much about me, she just played with Riley and then she left to go home. That was the first and last time I saw her for a very long time. I knew she still was Riley's best friend because Riley couldn't stop talking about her. I just didn't think she would still be so gorgeous.

As soon as I walked through the door she was looking at me, she looked even more beautiful than I remembered. Still young but definitely she was becoming a young woman. I don't think I ever even thought about the possibility of falling for Maya. Sure she was beautiful and amazing girl, but that did not change the fact that she was three years younger than me and my niece's best friend.

The years went on and I continued to turn her down, not realizing how much I truly hurt her. Day after day, year after year, it was like a game to me. I think I realized that I might feel something towards Maya after she and Riley sneaked out to visit my dorm for the first time. Before that night I hadn't really taken her feelings serious but as she sat there and told me, told me everything about her feelings towards me and I realized that what I had thought was a game, was her reality.

Time moved on, I finally told her that we might be something in the future, that day in the ski lodge. I told her that we had to wait and she understood. I had fallen for her, I don't know when, I know why though. She's amazing and perfect and gorgeous. It was destined to happen, if not that night, it would have happened another night.

Life continued, we held contact and she became one of the best friends I had ever had. We grew closer even though it wasn't romantically. She used to visit me and we both really relied on the thought of someday.

But after she turned seventeen and I turned twenty I screwed up. Big.
