Emily walked into the beautiful cobblestone entrance of Wood Creek High School. She opened the large double doors and let out a gasp at the sight of her school. It was larger than she thought it would be, the outside of her school was nice but nothing was as clean and organized as the inside. She was greeted by a tall and skinny lady with scraggly, and blonde hair. She had a small face with big brown eyes, though her face seemed to be crooked, she was a very beautiful young lady.
"Hello." said the lady. "Welcome to Wood Creek High School. My name is Mrs.Conners."
"Hello Mrs.Conners. This is my first year here." Replied Emily
"Oh, aren't you the exchange student from Germany?"
   "Yes. How did you know?"
"I know everyone, for I am the vice principal. I keep track of everyone who comes here."
"Oh ok. Well, nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too. Here, come with me, let's go get your schedule. School will start in 15 minutes so you have time to review your schedule and find your locker."
Mrs.Conners took Emily to the front desk where she would get her schedule. Classes were very different here than in Germany. Here they had 4 classes every day, in Germany they had 8 classes every day. At least she had some of her favorite classes like art, graphic design, theatre, and language arts.
"Emily, your locker is number 237 on the second floor and the code is 2,11,5. It should be easy to find since it's right by your language arts class." Mrs.Conners said.
"Number 237? Like the room number from the 1980's movie The Shining?" Emily asked.
"Yes." She laughed, "I'm guessing you like horror?"
"Yeah, a lot. Halloween is my favorite holiday after all."
"Alrighty then. Maybe later in the year you'd like to join the drama club?"
"That sounds pretty cool actually. Maybe I'll try it!"
"That'll be very nice. I have to go now, school starts in 6 minutes. I'll see you again sometime. Good luck today!"
   "Okay Mrs.Conners, thank you!"
As Mrs.Conners walked down the hall into the principal's office, Emily opened her locker and put her belongings inside. Her first period class was Language arts so she put her binder, paper, and pencils in her bag. The bell rang and she walked to class. When she entered through the door, she realized that she was the first student to arrive and her language arts teacher, Ms.Arikson, was standing by the door.
"Welcome to my 11th grade language arts class! I see you're the first person to arrive. It's very unusual for the students here to arrive on time. Is this your first year here?" asked Ms.Arikson.
   "Oh uh, yes." Emily said
   "Where are you from?"
"I'm from Germany but I had to move here to North Carolina.
"Oh that's something new. Oh my, how rude of me! My name is Ms.Arikson, what's yours?
"My name's Emily, it's very nice to meet you!" Emily said with a cheerful grin on her face.
"Go ahead and have a seat in any of the desks you'd like. The other students should be here sometime soon."
She sat down at the front desk in the first row. The seat had been cold, it hadn't been sat in for two months. She chose this particular seat because it reminded her of her old home. The air conditioner was right above her face, and the window was to her right. It also had the perfect view of the whiteboard, but there was a sweet, floral scent coming from Ms.Arikson's desk which was close to her. This scent was very calming to Emily.
She looked up to her left and saw a short boy with dark, curly hair walk in. He looked very happy to be here. He had a wide smile on his face, almost like the grin of the Cheshire Cat from Alice In Wonderland, but of course not in a creepy way. He looked at her and smiled even more. He knew Emily wasn't from here because of the way she dressed and the way she perked up in her seat, looking around the room seeming fascinated with the sights. He sat in the seat behind her and started to play with her long and springy hair.
"Um excuse me... what are you doing?" Emily said as she turned around quickly with a wierd expression on her face.
"Oh! Sorry!" the boy replied, "your hair is just so beautiful and healthy I needed to see it up close. My name's Oliver, this is my third year here, I've never seen you before. I'm guessing you're new here?"
"Yes, I am from Germany. My name's Emily. I see you know a lot about hair?
"Yeah, my mom works at the hair salon down the street. I help her with washing and brushing hair. I honestly love the thought of being a hair stylist, I love the feeling of making a person feel beautiful."
"That's very sweet. I thought you had an immediate crush on me or something." she laughed.
"Oh, no lol. I'm not into girls sorry. I'm kind of gay..."
"Oh cool! It's nice to meet a person that expresses their true self."
"You don't have a problem with it?"
"Of course not! I'm not one to judge." she smiled at Oliver.
   "Thanks." Oliver smiled back.
The second bell rang and all of the students were in their desks. After the period was over, Oliver walked with Emily to her locker and to her next class. They had the first 3 classes together. They spent lunch together and they walked to the school entrance together after school.
"Thanks for spending the day with me Oliver, you're a great friend." Emily said to Oliver
"Awe shucks, you're welcome!" Oliver replied.
"Sorry I have to go now my mother is here. Bye!"
   "Bye!"
Emily's mother pulled up to the side of the school and she got in the car. She told her everything that happened and how she has a new friend. Her mother was so happy that she had a good day that when they got home, they invited her father to come with them to Applebee's. This was the best first day of school Emily's had in years.
