4 days. 4. Freaking. Days. That's a really long time for a demigod with severe ADHD to be trapped on a tiny, smelly boat with 6 other people.
I'm sure that everyone on the boat would have thought I've gone crazy.
You can usually find me on the roof of the boat. The air is cool and the sun hits my back. Unless it's stormy, then I get drenched (it happened before).By the fourth day, I had almost lost my mind. I was the first off the boat, racing into Liberia, wasting so time at all to get off the waters.
But, of course, with my luck, as soon as we all gathered our bearings, a mighty roar echoes its way across the sandy shores of Liberia.
"I know that sound all too well." Annabeth states with a stony expression. "It's a Drakon."
I was tempted to ask if it was like Festus, but something told me that it's was very different.
"Drakon with a K, the really old ones? The ones that spit poison, can paralyse you with their eyes, and have titanium scales?" Percy asked with a hint of worry in is voice.
"I really hope you're joking." Franks says. "That's not funny, Percy."
Another roar rips the air around us and Percy's face turns white. "I'm not joking." Annabeth gives him a look that says 'I'm not sure if I can do this' and he wraps his arm around her waist. Calypso... I think.
How is she? What was going on back at CHB? Did many Romans visit? Had the Stoll's already covered bunker 9 in sticky notes? All these thoughts made me homesick and I longed for the warmth of the campfire. I was lulled from my daydream when a large shadow stretched across the beach.
Okay, first thought when I saw the Drakon was oh gosh, it's ugly. I mean, c'mon! Not EVERYTHING has to be ugly in the world! Festus is a dragon, but he was damn handsome! (Heh... dam...) This Drakon looked insanely old, too. The skin around it's legs were a little flabby and it had a sagging neck.
And then I saw how big it was, and my heart leapt into my throat. This thing was easily 50 meters long. Yes, you heard me. It was massive. It's limbs were lean, as if it could get a good workout from just carrying its heavy body around. Rows of razor-sharp, yellow-stained teeth and it was foaming at the mouth. It's bright yellow eyes stared us down, hungrily.Yet another roar boomed and the reptile advanced quickly, each step covering meters of ground. The team set to work, stabbing and dodging, the poison spilling all around us. Annabeth put on her Yankees cap and crept behind the monster to find any weak points between the indestructible scales. I blasted fireballs at it's face while Percy used the ocean - which was conveniently behind us - to drown the beast. Jason tapped his shoulder and they shared mischievous grins. Crossing swords, Percy and Jason worked together to make a hurricane. Frank turned into a vulture and swooped down at the Drakon to claw at its eyes, but he wasn't really progressing as the creature snapped at him when he got too close. After what felt like a Millenia of trying to kill this stupid thing, jason passed out from exhaustion and Percy was close.
The Drakon spat more poison and Percy desperately looked to were Annabeth was standing, her cap on the ground. They shared some looks. "No..." her eyes widened. "Percy, please... don't..." He had the look that said 'I have to'.
Meanwhile, Piper was using charmspeak to confuse the beast and Hazel was pelting it with gems. Hazel thrust one jewel into its eye and I couldn't help but follow it. Big mistake. The monster caught me staring and its eyes bore into my soul. I had a panicking thought that nagged at the back of my mind. Oh my gods that giant snake is going to eat me. I suddenly found myself unable to move. Quickly, I realised why they said that the Drakon could paralyse you. It wasn't the turn-to-stone type of paralysis, it was more of a terrified paralysis.
"People might want to step back..." Percy said in a dangerously calm tone. The Drakon froze as if it knew what he was doing. I would have moved back, but I was kinda paralysed, so...
Percy closed his eyes and his face contorted in concentrating. Annabeth slowly backed away and broke down in tears, her body violently shaking while she sobbed. Frank, who was still a vulture, swooped and grabbed Jason's arm and deposited him next to Annabeth, then turning to me, noticing that I couldn't move. He grabbed my forearm and frantically pulled me towards Annabeth and Jason when Percy let out a cry and the poison on the ground shot into the Drakon's face, burning its eyes and skin. Annabeth's screams filled the air around us. Then Percy capped and uncapped Riptide a fraction of a millisecond before throwing it in the beasts mouth. Riptide stabbed through the top of its mouth and you could see the tip of the sword jutting out its nose. The Drakon screeched in annoyance and Jason woke with a start. He sat straight up, let out a battle cry as lightning shocked the beast once more, and then collapsed again. Percy then calmly walked up to the seizing creature and stomped on its face, the Drakon crumbling to dust. Then he passed out.
____________________LINE-BREAK_______________________
Once the seven had found shade under a tree, two people each took watch so the others could rest. They'd been fighting for hours - without even realising it.
First watch, Hazel and Piper stayed up because they didn't use up as much energy as the rest. I wasn't meant to stay up, but I couldn't get myself to relax. The Drakons eyes.... ugh. Shivers went down my spine as an image of those big yellow eyes - like spotlights - entered my head. I noticed somebody moving in the corner of my eye and then I heard shouting. I looked over to see Percy and Annabeth on the beach. Usually, they'd be all lovey-dovey, but Annabeth seemed to be yelling at Percy, still crying from before.
Percy had his hands out as a 'I'm really sorry, please forgive me?!?' gesture, but she wasn't having any of it.
"Save it!" I heard her yell, even from all the way I've here. "I asked you not to do it, but you did it anyway, Percy! What am I supposed to do?! I can't just erase that from my memory, and you know I can't!" Then she said something a little quieter. And Percy dropped his arms. His back straightened, as if he couldn't believe what she'd just said. Annabeth's eyes widened and she tried apologising, but Percy was already walking away. She grabbed his wrist and he looked back at her, but softly pulled his arm from her grip.
Percy walked this way, and I could see the tears sunning down his face. In the distance, Annabeth sunk to the ground and out her head in her hands. Percy sat in a bed roll and stared at her for a few seconds.
"Hey man, are you o-" I tried being sympathetic, but he didn't want that.
"With all due respect, Leo, just leave it." He said gently but his voice was full of hurt, as if he didn't want to hurt my feelings by being rude. Then he laid on the bed roll and was still.
I still wasn't sure where Percy and I stood in the way of friendships. I felt like he still blamed me that we fired on the roman camp ages ago - even though he said he didn't. And I still can't help feeling guilty.
Instead of sitting there and sulking, I decided that I'd iris-message Calypso.
