Alec's POV:

Magnus had left a couple of hours ago. I was still at the apartment, alone. Bored out of my mind, I thought about my options. Just as I went to call Jace and Simon over, I got a call. It was my mum. I picked up and her voice streamed through the phone, a rush of muddled letters.
"Woah! Mum, slow down." She stopped talking. "What's wrong?"
"I- I tried to call Izzy but- but she didn't pick up." She said after a long pause of composing herself.
"Mum, what happened?"
"I- it was Max..."
"I thought Max was was at Nan's house? Wasn't he?"
"Y- yeah, yeah he was but your dad went to pick him up. They were on their way back and Max- H- he had somehow got his belt undone without your dad noticing and-" As the last words reached my ear it felt as though someone had just punched me right in the stomach. I didn't reply. I couldn't reply. I just stood there, I tried to speak but nothing came out. I fell to the floor, the phone dropped out of my hand. The sound of my mum calling my name through the phone.
Then nothing...

Magnus's POV:

The night was almost over and everyone had drunk so much, except Ragnor, who I dragged along. He was the designated driver.
"Okay girls, last shot's on me!" I said as the bartender made her way over to our huddle. Everyone grabbed a shot, apart from Ragnor. Izzy held her glass high above her head, everyone followed her lead.
"This one's to Magnus... for making my brother the luckiest person alive." Everyone cheered in agreement as I just laughed. We took our shots and started to make our way out. I promised not to get too drunk tonight so I was only tipsy. We all exited the club laughing as Caterina tripped over on her way out. From what I can remember, it really wasn't that funny. I guess we just had a lot to drink.

"Okay guys, come on. Get in the car." Ragnor said as he opened up the backdoor to his, somewhat, expensive car.
"Why chauffeur, is that the way you speak to your customers now?" I put on a posh accent as I said the words. Ragnor gave me a look painted with disappointment as he shook his head.
"Just get in the car."
"Oh someone's got an attitude."

I had finally got to the apartment door and was searching for my keys. I found them in my pocket and took them out.
"There you are." I said as I pulled the keys in front of my face. I fumbled with the keys and put them in the door, struggling to get it open.

I walked inside, taking my jacket off and throwing it to the floor as I did so.
"Alexander! I'm home." There was no answer. "Alexander?"
I walked in the living room to find Alec on the floor, the phone by his side. I ran to him.
"Alexander!" He was unconscious. "Come on, wake up." I shook Alec over and over in an attempt to wake him up. "Come on!" I ran to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I sat by Alec, placing his head on my knee. I splashed the water on his face. He jolted awake.
"Alec! What happened?" As he became more conscious of what was happening he broke out in tears. I pulled his head into my chest, my hands holding his neck and the back of his head.
"Shhh... It's okay. I'm here, it's okay." He grabbed my arm for support and started to cry even harder. "Shhhh..."

Some time later Alec had stopped crying. He wiped the tears off his face.
"Alec, what happened?" I asked, concerned.
"M- my dad and Max, they were in a- a car accident. Max, he- he took his seatbelt off and..."
"And what?"
"And..." Suddenly, the realisation set in, I knew exactly what he was going to say and I didn't want to hear it. I didn't  want the words to leave his mouth.
"He's dead, Magnus." He broke out into tears again and buried his head in my chest.

"Max is dead."
