I want to buy a house
The front yard will be pretty and scattered with dandelions
The walkway leading up to the door will be paved in smooth white cement
Exactly four steps leading up to the front door
It will open with a slight, inviting creak
The smell will be of nothing in particular except warmth
The cat will lay, sleepy, on the couch
The floor will be blanketed with cherry wood
The walls will be coated with a palette of cool, bright colors
Turquoise for the bathroom, amethyst for the guest room
I will buy five or ten identical lamps and scatter them around the home, so as to have a uniform theme running throughout the houseIn the master bedroom the bed will be large, king size
And over it an elaborate, embroidered comforter will be draped
The headboard will be shiny and perfect and smooth and white
Just like the skin of the small woman who lays under the sheets
And the lamp on the nightstand will make you double-take
because, hey, wait, didn't you see that same lamp in theFamily room
Not exactly appropriately titled
When I buy this house it will just be me and my wife
"Family" room-- more like couple room
That's okay
We will have all the people we need (plus a kitty)
And the bamboo-green walls will glow under the light of the
sun that filters in through squeaky-clean glass windowsAnd that very same sun will serve as a hair dryer
to those who wash their hair in the pristine shower
in the bathroom where the walls are painted blue-green
with the slight undertone of
the pale, bushing pink of the faces
that giggle upon laughing at themselves
dumbly spilling shampoo under the slippery jet of water
that comes from the clean shower head
And those who use the bathroom simply for
its spotless porcelain toilet
will wash their hands with foamy soap
that is scented likeApple pie
Brought to a group of friends,
all sat down patiently around an oblong dining table
that matches the wooden floors.
Apple pie
served fresh and warm and ala mode with whipped cream
in a pie dish that is hand-decorated with sapphire blue watercolors
in a fashion that screams "I'm expensive!"
The memories made in the dining room, though,
make the costs of the posh china worth it
Tonight, we dine with our finest, most sparkling silverwareClean headboard
Clean windows
Clean shower and toilet
Clean silverware
Clean
Clean
Clean
Clean it all up
Bring out the mop and bleach
Scrub until there isn't any more evidence
Disinfect
Get rid of it
Don't give any hints it was ever there
Wipe it
Highlight+delete
And, for fuck's sake
Don't you dare let anyone into the kitchen
I can't have them look at such a mess
I can't have anyone see what a disaster the kitchen is
They cannot see the pale, ice-blue walls splattered with blood
They cannot know that the red pieces in the pie were not apple skins
They cannot be exposed to such a train-wreck
Clean
Clean
Clean
CleanI want to buy a house
The front yard will be pretty and scattered with dandelions
The walkway leading up to the door will be paved in smooth white cement
And no one will expect that anything sinister ever happens
Behind the front door that will open
with a slight, inviting creak~
Happy Halloween Eve, everyone.
