Ok, I don't know about you guys but that last chapter made me pretty sad. Killing off characters is hard...
~•~
It's been two weeks since the funeral. I'm finally a person again. I can switch forms at my own will. I don't think I'll ever be a lion again though. My shoulder finally healed, it is just a scar now. We all started to go to training again. It's just Ms. Callaghan and I now. The humans have been quiet lately, maybe mourning their own losses. To be honest, I don't really care what they're doing as long as they're leaving us out of it. Ms. Callaghan is pretty satisfied with my shapeshifting skills, so we have moved on to telepathy. I had a new teacher too, since Ms. Callaghan is a Shifter. My new teacher is a little older than Ms. Callaghan and her name is Mrs. Smith -like from the movie Mr. And Mrs. Smith. She's awesome. Remember Chris and David? This is their mom. I'm getting a lot better at telepathy. Soon, they'll be teaching me together because I'll need to be able to use shifting and telepathy together. Today, I'm practicing moving stuff with my mind. There's a dart sitting on the table in front of me. It's a child's one though, with a velcro tip. I'm supposed to "throw" it at a velcro dartboard sitting about five feet away. Once I get good at that, we'll move on to real darts, then things like knives. Today, I'm getting the kid treatment just in case I fling the dart at a person instead of the target. Don't want to stab anybody. I turned my attention to the little neon coloured dart, concentrating hard.
Move, I thought, move, move.
It started to shake a little, then slid across the table toward the target. I got so excited I lost concentration and it stopped moving. The most I'd been able to do so far was send small snippets of thoughts to one other person. I whipped around to Mrs. Smith.
"Look! I made it move!" I was practically jumping up and down.
"God job! Now make it fly. Right to the target." She high-fived me and turned me around, back to the task. I poured my complete concentration into it, and just for fun put a finger against my temple like Shawn Spencer. The dart began to shake again, then continue sliding on the table. It got to the edge and kept going, flying toward the target. It's flight was wobbly and not quite straight but it stuck to the target.
"Yes!" I cheered, throwing my hands in the air. Making a break through in using my powers was one of the most amazing feelings. I just wish Katie could be here, learning with me.
Mrs. Smith interrupted my thoughts by saying, "Let's do it again. Try to make it shake less this time." She was smiling through her criticism. She was excited for me. Mrs. Smith returned the dart to its original spot. I turned back to the table and stared at the dart. I focused on it. The foam it was made from, the neon orange and blue colours. I visualised it coming up off the table and arcing toward the target in perfect flight, hitting it right in the middle. I opened my eyes, not realising I even closed them, and found the table empty. I looked to the target where the dart was sticking straight out of the middle. I turned to Mrs. Smith, my mouth forming a small "o". She was beaming at me, hands clasped together at her chest, like a proud mother.
"I could have explained what you had to do, but it's more fun when you figure it out on your own," she said, placing a hand on my shoulder.
"Can I do it again?" I asked, excited.
"Nothing's stopping you," she smiled.
I started walking to the target but she grabbed my arm.
"Bring the dart back this time." I caught on to what she was saying and went behind the table, across from the target. I stared at the dart for a moment before closing my eyes. I thought about the dart pulling off the target, imagined the ripping sound velcro made when it came apart. Then I pictured it coming back away from the target and flying into my hand. My eyes popped open as I suddenly felt a weight in my hand.
"You are such a fast learner! I-" The bell for lunch rang, cutting Mrs. Smith off, "am proud of you. Let's go get some food!" She finished after the bell stop. We walked together to the cafeteria. I found my friends and went to their table. Chris and Danny were coming to sit with us everyday now. I think Chris and Lily like each other. Wren and I have a bet on when they'll finally get together. Mrs. Smith ended up walking to the table with us to say hi to her sons. I bent down by Wren and kissed him on the cheek.
"I'm going to go get food," I said, giving a small wave over my shoulder as I walked away. They were serving sub sandwiches and chips today. I picked a plain sub with roast beef and cheese, and a bag of pretzels. I went back to my table. Mrs. Smith was gone by the time I got back. I sat down on the seat next to Wren. I took a huge bite out of my sub and everybody just kind of stared at me.
"Waf?" It was supposed to be what, but what can I do? There's a big sandwich chunk in my mouth.
"Very attractive. You must get all the guys," Danny joked.
I chewed and swallowed before answering him.
"I only need this one, though," I ruffled Wren's hair. Wren smiled for a moment then scowled.
"You messed up my perfect hairdo!" He mockingly exclaimed. He quickly raised his hands to his head, running his fingers through his dark hair to "fix" it.
"I'll mess it up more later." Everybody laughed at my innuendo except Lily. She had a disgusted expression on her face, but a smile in her eyes.
"I'm basically your sister. I don't want to her about that," She laughed. It was nice, laughing with my friends. We were finally getting back to normal. Of course, this was just to easy. The entire castle started to shake. Like you would in an earthquake, we all scrambled under the table.
"Are earthquakes even common in Ireland?"
