A million kisses and hugs, and a bagillion pictures later, we’re in the reception. I had to take 15 pictures with James, I counted. Damn. I smile as the DJ announces the new Mr. and Mrs. Laid. Everyone applauded as my sister and Russell entered smiling so wide. I clap then take a seat. I’ve noticed that after the ceremony, everyone has slowly drifted away from me. I mean, for example, on the table it’s me, James, Emily, Ella, Leo, Rosa, Larry, Tim and Judy; and ALL of them seem to have moved their chairs away from me! Next to me was Rosa and on my other side sat Tim, who’s moved his chair closer to James because (as he’s told us multiple times just in the past hour) he wants to be like his Uncle James. I frown as I watch everyone laugh and talk, and that’s just on my table! Russell and Ginger make their way to their table, which is really a small little table for just the two of them, right next to ours. I smile over to Ginger who blushes a little then looks away. Mrs. Laid walks over to them with a waiter then she glares at the waiter, and he runs off. Then that evil witch makes her way over to us. “Hello my dear loved ones....Mildred,” Mrs. Laid says as she glares down at me. And honestly, I can say this is a new low, even for Mrs. Laid. She has never signaled me out like that. I look around the table to see if anyone noticed, but they all seem to be in their own world.
“Mrs. Laid,” I reply with a smile. Mrs. Laid glares at me then she turns and walks over to her table, which she’s sharing with my parents, my poor parents. “That was new,” I say but everyone seems to ignore me.
“Momma, where’s the food?” Judy complains from her dad’s lap.
“It’s on it’s way hunny,” Rosa says. She glances over to me, then looks down at her tummy.
“He kicking today?” I ask as I lean towards Rosa.
“He’s being well behaved,” Rosa says without looking at me.
“Unlike others,” Emily says in a tone that surprises me. It’s like, EXTRA mean. I look up at her shocked, and she quickly looks away.
“Mils, what you do?” James asks. Thank goodness he noticed!
“I honestly don’t know!” I say as I look at everyone. Ella let’s out a grunt, and this has to be the biggest surprise. Ella is always so nice. “Seriously guys, what’d I do?” I ask as I look around.
“Are they mad at you Mili?” Tim asks as he too looks around the table.
“Apparently, but I don’t know why,” I say.
“Mili, please,” Rosa says. Ok, enough is enough!
“What is going on?” I say. Everyone ignores me.
“Looks like I missed the memo,” James says with a shrug. Damn. Everyone hates me and isn’t talking to me, except the one person I want to hate and do NOT want to talk to.
“Mildred, can I have a word with you,” my mother says, she came outta nowhere.
“Uhm, sure,” I say as I stand up.
Damn. Double damn!! Ah!! I don’t even know what to say!! I chew on my thumb as I walk back and forth in front of the entrance. I can hear music and laughter. “Damn,” I say as I nibble on my thumb.
“Hey,” Will says as he joins me. Will was placed at another table, since I told Ginger too late. I wave over to him but keep walking. “Why are you out here?” Will asks as he pulls my finger away from my mouth. I begin to chew on my lip. “Mili, what is it?” Will asks as he rubs my palm with his thumb.
“It’s just....ok, what I’m about to tell you has to stay between us, got it?” I ask. Will nods. “So before the wedding, Ginger was like freaking out. She was having second thoughts and all that. But James and I managed to calm her down. Then she was freaking out about what to tell Russell, because she was emberassed that she got cold feet, so I told her to tell him that I had made her sit in the room and tell me that she really wanted to marry him and stuff.”
