Here it was.
High school. What was I supposed to do? I was a freshman, a guppy in the world full of sharks and dolphins.
Back in eight grade, I was at the top of the food chain. The oldest in the school, we knew what to expect. I knew that routine like the back of my hand. My friends and I even had our own specific seats at lunch. We had our own place in the group. But now, half the group went to a different school. The thought of us being split apart physically hurt my chest.
I find my best friend, Sophia, and my nerves lessen. Sophia and I have been close since the second grade. Seeing her in a hallway full of strangers put me at ease.
"Here we are!" She smiled, taking in everything. There was a lot to take in.
I nodded. I was about to say something when the sudden pounding of snare drums took my voice away. The marching band.
Quickly, everyone moved out of the way, not wanting to be stampeded. I found the atmosphere festive and fun, and I felt pride for my school. However, I was quite distracted, looking for once person in particular....
Ah, there he was. Elijah Fence- 🔑. His cymbals kept the beat of our fight song, like a train track keeps the train on course. He had his concentration face on, which I found quite adorable.
Suddenly, another friend came up. Mary, walking after the band with a certain bounce in her step. Her dyed- red hair went down to her shoulders.
"THAT MARCHING BAND NEARLY GAVE ME A HEART ATTACK!" She screamed over the trombones and clarinets.
I smiled, but noticed her eyes flash black, then back to their regular chocolate brown. That only meant bad things.
Sophia didn't notice, she was too busy staring at her engagement ring. "Gabe wanted to come, but he had archangel business to take care of." She frowned.
I laughed. Her candy loving fiancé was always on my watch list. Sophia only deserved the best.
Suddenly there was a flash of green as Harry the Craig ran by. "Dank meeeemes!" He yelled. "My trombone is made of memes. My eyebrows are made of memes. My soul is made of memes. Memes."
Mary swatted his arm, which he dodged. It was his instinct now. After he had started dating the daughter of Loki, Chloe, Mary kept tabs on him. They happened to be very close.
The bell for class rang, and we had to part ways. I didn't get to warn Sofa about Mary's eyes, but Harry and I had the same first hour, so I told him there.
"I'm sure it was just the commotion of us being back at school." Harry adjusted his fedora. "The marching band must have startled her."
"All that could be true, but do we want to take any chances?" I asked. We had a strangely eventful summer, resulting in time travel, demons, and Mary having her daughter, Lydia. "Things have finally slowed down."
Harry shrugged. "What do you want me to do? I have to stay on her good side. If I die, Chloe will be upset, and I can't let that happen."
I didn't have an answer. I loved Mary, but we had to watch her dark side, without hurting her.
We were then called to our seats. Demon eyes, stomach butterflies and nerves jumping about, all before first hour.
