Turns out there's a lot of bridges by Jenna's apartment complex. I had taken to walking on foot now once I had finally found a parking spot. My sister walked beside me holding my hand. I keep my gaze cautious and Aisling tight to my side, not knowing freak will climb out of the shadows and grab one of us. I shivered even though it wasn't cold. I have learned through out the years that you can't trust anyone expect the people you know well.
I had to check twice to make sure that the huddled bodies under bridge weren't the homeless and were indeed Jenna and someone else I didn't register. Her black wavy hair immediately gave her away. I crept closer to my friend wishing I brought something to defend myself with. But she spotted me first."SKY! SKY! Over here!" Jenna yelled as she frantically waved me over. So much for stealth.
As we made our way over to her the hump next to her turned out to be Seth.
"Jeez Seth I thought you were some weird homeless man creeping on Jenna."
"Just practicing my skills." He replies flashing one of his signature creepy yet happy smiles while Jenna looked like she was about to hit over the head for the comment.
"You're weird" said Aisling, who always said what was on her mind.
"You'll get used to it sweetie, your sister did." He said as he patted her on the head. She scowls and pushes his hand away.
"Can we just get this meeting started I'm freezing." Said Jenna, tightening her designer coat around herself.
I pull my sister onto to my lap and start speaking.
"First things first how heck did you burn your apartment down?"
Her face flushed and she stares at millions of rocks that dotted the shore of the man made river.
"I don't know it just happened... I can't really explain" she was obviously deep in thought but she also looked kinda like when Aisling predicts things, in pain.
"Recount your steps." I suggest. "Tell me everything that happened before and after even if it doesn't seem important."
"Okay so I didn't have any school that day because of the Statue of Liberty thing so I was home all day and I did what I normally did, put on my makeup, went online, that's technically all I did today. Well before the fire."
"What happened just before the fire" Seth questions.
"Oh yeah I was on balcony with phone trying to take a selfie and... I dropped my phone and went flying to streets below..."
Seth tried to hold back laughs but was ultimately failing. That just made Jenna even more embarrassed making her face more red than it already was. After a few elbow jabs from her he finally stifled his laughter.
"And how does this connect to the fire?" I asked.
"Well after I dropped it I went inside and I was really angry at myself since I had just got it and was seven hundred dollars. Then sparks started to come out my hands, like literally sparks. Then it turned into fire and it wouldn't stop coming. It was catching on everything, the couch, the floor, everything. So I went to the kitchen sink and doused my hands in the water until it stopped. Then, you know how I do under pressure Sky I darted out of there just taking my old phone and you were still able to call me because I had disconnected it yet."
Every one of her words were rushed and her eyes were wet like she was going to cry.I remember when the vase had flown across the room. It was when I had thought my sister was dead. An emotional trigger. The emotion of losing the phone must of triggered her powers. But I hadn't made that vase move. Or had I? I shook the thought away I had more important things to worry about and Aisling didn't seem to need a trigger. She could just do it.
"You're not the only one who can do things like that Jenna." My sister had spoken up. I almost forgotten she was even there.
"I can do it to"
Her watery eyes were now affixed on her. "You can make fire too?" She asked.
She shook her head slowly. "No, but I can predict the future."
Jenna stared at me in disbelief, her mouth hanging slightly open. I just shrugged. I had gotten used to unbelievable things by now.
"It's true" I said. "She can predict things, she even predicted you having powers."
She wore a look a defeat on her face. "I am just so done, what can't things go back to normal!?" She slumped against the concrete wall. "Well Ashy since we're on the subject of crazy talk how about you tell how we got our powers in the first place?"
"It's from the nuclear power plant." She starts. "Nuclear waste has been leaking into the river by it for weeks now, allegedly creating some sort of new chemical and I think that's what's been giving us power."
"Wow" Jenna whispered. You could barely even hear her.
I thought over what Aisling just said. Wait, allegedly, aren't they sure there's a chemical in the water?
"Allegedly? Aren't they sure there's a chemical?"
She pauses for a few seconds before answering. "I don't think there's a chemical at all. I think that's just to cover up the fact that's there's traces of nuclear waste in the water. Can you imagine what it would be like if they found out that's there's waste in the water, there would riots and everything."
That was true. There would be people would be scared for their safety and maybe even turn to violence. If would just be better if they kept it all under wraps. Especially with the ISIS and North Korea scares. Jenna seems to read my mind.
"Yeah there's been riots all over town that the president should step up and to send troops and kill 'em all and blah blah blah. That would just make things worse." Jenna agreed.
Seth pipped up. "I agree with Ashy too, I'm so glad I missed marching band practice for this."
Just as I was about to continue the conversation I locked eyes with Jenna. Normally you wouldn't be able to catch it but as I looked intently into her eyes I could see the slightest tint of gray.
