After picking Aisling up from school I went home as quick as I could. I could still remember the teachers face, her usual kind smile was gone replaced with a look of worry as she ushered children out the door. Aisling was just as curious as me and with her home life she could easily tell when something's wrong. I had left my phone at home that day so I couldn't check what was going on.
"Sissy, what's wrong?"
I was driving us home my mind clouded with worry for mine and my sister's safety.
"I don't know Ashy, but we are gonna find out soon"
"I'm scared"
I didn't really know what to say to that. I was scared too but nothing was really comforting me.
"We're home" I say as we pull into the driveway.
"Is everything okay?" She asks as I take her out of her car seat.
"Everything going to be okay, Ashy"
She didn't seem to believe me but stayed quiet as we went inside.
"Mom, what's happening?"
She seemed to be frozen in place still clutching a broom, her eyes glued to the TV screen.
"Mom what are you-" I stopped halfway through my sentence.
"We have some breaking news here for you today, there has been a confirmed attack on the Statue of Liberty in New York City, New York. ISIS has claimed to have done the attack. It is not yet confirmed if there was any casualties. All schools within a 2 hour radius have been evacuated. We will now show the the shocking footage from the incident."
It first showed just the Statue of Liberty as peaceful and normal as can be. A plane rides in the sky completely unassuming until it starts to get closer and closer then it finds its target. Right in the center of the statue. It begins a nose dive locked on that point. A few people down below stop and stare, captivated while others run for safety. Then boom, the sound of coming apart in a fiery blast. The top half tilts back until it completely breaks off. It was like moments turned to minutes as it descends to the water below in a great splash. The bottom half stays up never to be the same again.
All I I could do was stare my mouth agape with shock. Aisling began to tear up."Tell me what's really happening Sky"
I couldn't answer that, there was too many thoughts running inside my head.
Why would they do that? They could have done so much more damage if they had targeted a building. Then it dawned on me. That attack wasn't meant to kill people. It was meant to scare people. To show how much power they really had over us.
I picked Aisling up in my arms and rushed to my room. I had to see if Jenna was doing okay. Jenna's my cousin, we've been so close ever since we were little. She lives in New York City, knowing her she would be freaking out right now. Setting my sister down on the bed I picked up my phone.

I am so freaking out right now!
Why aren't you answering me!?And so on. I quickly call her number, pacing the length of my room. She picked up on the first ring.
"SKY, where have you been!?"
"I'm sorry Jenna, I left my phone at home"
"Whatever, but did your school get evacuated?"
"Yeah but I'll be fine I live two hours away"
"And that's supposed to comfort me, I live in the dang city where it took place!"
"Its okay Jenna, you'll be fine"
"Sure, sure and before you you know it they'll be nuking the whole United States!"
I couldn't help but giggle at that.
"Okay JennaBoo I gotta go"
"Okay bye but if I die you're going to regret not talking to me!"
After hung up I gently took Aisling into my arms. After everything that had happened I could help but wonder about how good Our family's safety really was. What was to come next?
