Macy's P.O.V.
He never answered.
The door was locked. Baby's barking had never even reached my ears. Once again, Jonathan was gone.
And I felt the slightest bit of satisfaction knowing where he was. His mother must have been an amazing woman to raise a man like Jonathan. Although he could be insufferable at times, he was still someone I learned to adore.
The so-called 'outing'' with Jayden left me in lighter moods and I appreciated the fact that I was being welcomed. That appreciation also applied to Evan, Luke, and especially Jonathan.
Jonathan, who had reluctantly accepted me into his life and without even knowing it, made me feel truly happy. I hoped for him. I hoped for him to feel the joy I felt whenever he was near.
I had admitted to myself that the feelings I had for Jonathan were more than friendly. There was a shred of hope that he possibly shared the same feelings.
He had been a lot more open with his life. I now knew about his friends, family, and job. A part of me wondered if he opened up to others as quickly as he had done to me. No matter the answer, I appreciated that he trusted me.
Since Jonathan was on leave again and I hadn't gotten a call or message, I assumed he had his job all figured out so I focused on my own job.
The cafe had welcomed me back with friendly smiles and kind customers. There were regulars, I noticed. My grandma did her best to greet them personally. I had been working for a couple of hours before a particular someone had shown up.
"How's your day, cutie?"
"You here to scout the opposition, Luke?" I asked with a smile, greeting him in the booth he sat in.
"My business is perfectly fine and there's no need to worry about silly rivalries. I just wanted to talk to you."
"Well, if you wait another twenty minutes, my shift will be over and I'll be free. What exactly did you want to talk about?"
Luke shooed me away, saying he'd tell me after my shift ended. He was a lot more affectionate than Jonathan and it was interesting to talk to him. But with Jonathan, we could share conversations that ranged from little parts of our day to hours of talking about our personal lives.
Once my shift ended, I sat in the seat across Luke.
"Did you just want to catch up a bit?"
"I just wanted to know more about you. It's not often you see a new face, especially in this small town. Plus, you're getting pretty close to Jonathan and I have to make sure that you're not some deranged fan."
"I can assure you, I'm not. Ask away."
"Why did you start talking to Jonathan? And don't worry about filling me in on everything. Jonathan and I talk about these things."
I found it odd that Jonathan talked about me sometimes, from what Luke mentioned.
"Plain curiosity at first. Of course I'd be interested in my new neighbor. Then we talked a bit and I realized that he wasn't happy, so I took the liberty of trying to change that."
Luke gave me a genuine smile. "And you're doing pretty well, Mac."
"Mac?" I asked, the name sounding unfamiliar.
"I like it. Next question. Why'd you move?"
That was a topic I didn't want to talk about or even remember at the moment.
"Just wanted to hang out with my grandparents for a while before I head off for college, you know?" I lied.
"I get you. Well, any family?"
"Just my grandparents and my mom."
"Your mom? Why isn't she here?"
There was a short pause and Luke looked guilty for bringing her up as he saw my quick, pained expression. Though, I covered it up with a bright smile which he hopefully believed.
"She had to stay back for work, but she'll be coming back soon," I wasn't sure what else to say, so I began describing her. "She had the same dark blue eyes as me, but her hair was black and her skin was a bit more tanned than mine. I miss her a lot sometimes."
"I felt the same way when I moved out, but my mom and I were always calling. I actually called her daily, which weirded Jonathan out since we were roommates for a short while before he bought his house. I don't see her as much now either, but I know she's safe and that's all that matters, right?"
Safe. I wasn't sure if my mom really was. "Yeah, it is."
We had continued to talk until closing time. Luke and I were very similar family wise and personality wise as well. We were practically best friends at this point and I would quite enjoy regular meet ups like this, but all good things came to an end and we both said our goodbyes.
I was still clad in my uniform, but I didn't quite mind as I mindlessly walked the downtown streets. I passed by the several shops Jonathan and I had walked into, including the comics shop. With a quick thought, I had gone in and bough him a Joker figurine that he had taken slight interest in when we had visited the store. Being very intricately detailed, the figurine cost approximately $90, but money wasn't an issue at the moment.
Then I headed back to the park. It was calming, especially now that there weren't children running around. It was quaint, quiet, and empty. I sat there for a while, listening to Heathens by Twenty One Pilots and soon after, a call came in.
"Are you okay?" I spoke first, seeing Jonathan's name on my screen before answering.
"I'm fine, Macy. I just went to go visit my mom again. Listen, I want to say I'm sorry. My past with Jayden isn't all that grand so I was worried about you going out with him. I'll make sure to tel you more about it when I come home, but how was it?"
"It was nice. We saw the movie, we talked, and then we said goodbye."
There was a sense of relief in his voice. "So nothing happened."
"Nothing happened," I assured him. "I'm at the park right now and I'll be heading back to my grandparents in a bit. I hope your mom is doing better and that you and Baby are okay. When do you think you'll come home?"
After asking, I realized that I didn't classify my grandparents house as home. The place where I felt most content was at Jonathan's.
The certain teasing in Jonathan's voice insinuated that he probably noticed that too.
"I'll be home with you soon. Stay safe for me, kid."
"I will. Goodbye, Jonathan."
"Goodbye Macy."
