"Woah, brain freeze." My brother, Dean, snorts beside me. We have stopped over at the nearest fastfood to grab breakfast before heading back to school. He is currently beating his own record of chugging-and I MEAN chugging-down three milkshakes in two minutes without throwing up.
"Could you have LESS manners?" I retort.
"Yeah, I do," he winks at me.
I sigh at his indifference. "You know what, let's just go," I say. I don't wait for him anymore and head out the door.
As soon as I step out the door the hot summer wind hit my face. The air is humid and I resist the urge to remove my school jacket.
The walk to school is torture. The heat keeps pestering me. I must learn how to drive.
Yeah, we have school. We're unlike other schools which start in September, ours start at June.
You can't miss Western Academy. It has this huge sign up front with 'Western Academy' in big, bold red letters. And of course, students are always going in and out of the gates.
It's a boarding school. We have dorms and we move in to 'fully experience true education' as the principal said during my interview. I'd just moved in yesterday but I haven't met my roommate yet.
Basically, I don't mind. But I'm alone and vulnerable in a new school. No sweat, right?
"I'm hungry. I'm going to the caf. See ya lil' sis." Dean runs off, leaving me alone.
"But you just ate!" I yell after him even if I know he's out of earshot.
I start to walk to who knows where. I turn left, then right. Then left again, then to the right. I literally feel like I am going around in circles. I never really got around to memorizing this school.
I stop, suddenly feeling dizzy. I sway a bit and accidentally bump into a tree.
Embarassed, I walk off and continue looking for the dorms.
I am about to swipe my I.D. in the slot thingy of the door, but the door suddenly opens. It reveals a blonde girl in a tank top and sweatpants.
"Uh, hi?"
"Hi! I'm Kaitlyn, spelled with a 'K', so don't get that wrong. You must be Elle, my new roommate! Nice meeting you!" One word to describe her, bubbly. She gives off this feel-good vibe.
I enter and find everything in order. Kaitlyn must have been arranging everything.
"Nice, huh?"
I am about to reply when someone knocks on the door. I open the door and instantly back away when I see my oldest brother, Adrian. He goes by 'Big A' just 'coz he thinks that his name is dorky. Typical alpha male.
"Hey lil' sis!" he yells. He hugs me and messes up my hair.
"He-hey, stop it! Adrian Zoel Anderson put me down right now!" I cry when he starts to lift me up. I flail my arms around.
"Lil' sis!"
Uh-oh.
"Group hug!" Dean yells and squeezes me. Ben and Chris joins in too, and in a matter of seconds, I am squeezed by big muscles.
When they do let go I have to have two glasses of water and five minutes to catch my breath. That's how tight they squeezed me. Until now I'm still panting.
"Thanks guys, my asthma's starting to react again."
"You don't have asthma," Ben frowns.
"Yeah, we would know, since we are older than you," Chris smirks teasingly. I roll my eyes. They always bring up the subject of that they are more older than me.
I groan. "Can you just not bring that up for the nth time?"
"Sure, lil' sis," Chris laughs. I roll my eyes.
"Uh, Elle?" I have totally forgotten about Kaitlyn. She is standing near her bed awkwardly, probably because of my brothers' wildness.
"Students, you have exactly one hour to prepare before going to morning assembly," the speakers outside blare out. Everyday they have these recorded messages that are basically a pain.
"Let's go bros. Our sister needs some 'alone time' to focus on her 'asthma'," Adrian smirks, knowing that I was lying about asthma.
"Yeah go, shoo!" I begin pushing them towards the door. But seeing I'm too weak for them, they don't budge.
I stomp my foot in frustration. They laugh and leave. But before they do, they make sure to each mess my already messed up hair.
I turn and face Kaitlyn. "We should probably get ready." She nods.
Actually, I was in uniform already. But seeing as my brothers messed it up, I need to change into another uniform in order to look presentable and not like I had just survived World War II.
"So who were they? I assumed they were your brothers but I don't know them by name," Kaitlyn asks quietly. Is it me, or is she blushing?
"The first guy, the one who had on a varsity jacket, was Adrian, the oldest. The other, who had hair like he had just woken up, was Ben. The one who looked the most decent with his hair flat was Chris. Then the one with spiky hair was Dean," I say, and Kaitlyn blushes and continues to fix her tie.
It continues until we leave our room and are walking to the assembly hall.
"You like one of them, do you?" I poke her arm teasingly. She suddenly becomes interested in her feet.
"No way!" I half-shrieke, causing some people to glance my way.
"Why?" she frowns a bit.
"That's just weird. I can't picture anyone liking my brothers. They're so arrogant it drives me nuts."
"Chris can't be that arrogant," she argues But as soon as she says that she covers her mouth with her hands. My eyed widen in surprise of her slip-up.
"No way! That is too much! Chris! Seriously!" I can't help laughing so hard almost everyone's eyes are on me. Great first impression, Elle.
"No he's not!" she argues.
I don't stop laughing for a while. The term 'rolling on the floor laughing' is an understatement of what is my current state.
"Stop!" By this time, Kaitlyn's already beet-red, probably from the stares of the people I'm getting.
I only stop laughing when the principal clears his throat at the mic in front. We take seats but even then, I am still giggling.
I only stop when I see a pair of blue eyes staring at me, watching my every move.
