Two years later...
"Oh you are so dead Elle!" I giggle as Hunter chases me around the mansion. I've sorta memorized it, sorta. This is the bit where I get lost again with Hunter on my tail.
When he finally catches up to me he wrestles me to the ground. I throw him off me and laugh when he lands on his backside.
"Never, and I mean never, put itching powder in my shoes again," he says when he has recovered. I look at his bare feet and double over again when I see they are beet-red from all his scratching.
I've grown used to this. At first when they told me what they are I freaked out. No, I really did. It was a month when I refused to go out of my room and I screamed whenever they approached me. I was crying that whole month too. I wanted my brothers to come and find me. But they never came. After that month I finally allowed them to go near me but I never spoke. I've also given up the hope that my brothers would ever find me. That also contributed to my long shutdown from the rest of the world.
But now here I am. I train with Hunter and the rest of the other 'wolves'. I now could beat Hunter, even if he shifts. Travis, too. But I could never beat Will. I don't have the guts to. He's probably the most scary wolf out there even with his calm and quiet demeanor.
Hunter stops glaring at me and his eyes glaze over. I sigh. Here we go again. I hate it when they mind-link each other. With whom? With Will.
Will's away on some vacation and he's putting Travis and Hunter in charge though he still checks up on them every hour. Basically it's a pain.
So in order to catch their attention, I put itching powder in Hunter's shoes when they went to play for football. He was out in the field and he started doing some jig and I knew the itching powder worked.
"Where do you find itching powder?" he asks while trying to get up without making his feet itch.
"I'm not gonna tell you that I get it from Jace-- oops!" I fake putting my hand over my mouth and gasping.
Jace is his best best best BEST friend. And did I mention his best friend? They are so close they drive everyone nuts. They grew up together and they know how each other thinks and acts.
"Haha, very funny Elle." He crosses his arms in mock disappointment and I hop on his back.
"Elle! Get off me now! Don't you know how much you weigh?" I gasp and he stops ranting about my weight.
"Never, and I mean never, tell a girl she's fat," I say, mimicking his tone from earlier.
"I didn't tell a girl she's fat. I told an Elle," he jokes and I punch him in the gut and run.
"Elle! Oh it is on!" I hear his heavy footsteps and I push myself more to sprint quickly, knowing that it's only a matter of time before he uses his werewolf speed.
I get to the field before he catches up. He wrestles me to the ground again and tickles me.
"Stop, no! Hunter, stop tickling me!" I cry between giggles.
"What did you say?" he teases and tickles me by my neck. I swat his hand away and try to hit him but he tickles me harder and I only laugh.
"I--I'm sorry!" I blurt out and he gets off me.
The bell rings and we head back to the mansion for lunch.
"Hunter," Travis calls out.
"No Elle? Fine, be that way. Watch out for your shoes!" I sit across from him and cross my arms.
Hunter laughs and points to his feet. Travis cringes away from him and says, "So want to show me your moves? I could use them when we play football." I laugh hard, causing people to look our way. I ignore them. It's always been like this. People look at me and think, It's that human girl again making a scene. But I don't care. I can take them down in my sleep.
"Hey Elle!" Jace sits my me.
"Finally! Somebody who calls my name!" I raise my arms in joy and Jace laughs.
I say "Waddup Jason!" earning me a slap on the back of my head.
"Shut it," he snaps. He hates being called his real name. But I know he's not mad. No one could stay mad at me. I'm awesome!
"Will linked that he and Layla are coming back home," Travis informs us. Layla is Will's mate, his other half, his soulmate if you may. It's a werewolf thing. They went away for a month so they could have some 'alone time'. He recently just found her so he's really paranoid when she's away from him so they thought to go to a private island for a while. They could afford it yeah, but his duties almost make it imposible for him to rest.
"I miss Will," I say involuntarily. It's been quiet here without him.
The others solemnly nod in agreement.
"Cheer up, there's bacon!" Jace raises his arms and waves them. We laugh at what he said. Same old Jace, food before anything.
We dig in. There's complete silence while we devour our food.
"When are Will and Layla coming back?" I say finally, between bites.
"Not sure. But I think they'll be back very soon," Travis replies.
"Hey Elle, wanna go for a run?" Jace nudges me. I nod excitedly and rise. He follows and we run out to the field.
"Ten bucks says you won't beat me," Jace dares. We postion ourselves and he makes a banging sound like a gun.
I sprint and for a while we're tied but of course being the cheat he is, he used his speed.
"No fair!" I yell and he just laughs.
"Took you long enough," he yawns and holds out his hand. I slap his hand away but he just holds it out again.
"Ten bucks," he teases. He wiggles his eyebrows and I hand him a dollar.
He looks at me, annoyed but I just raise my hands and cry out, "I'm broke buddy, don't get your hair gel in a twist!" I smirk while he paws at his hair.
"Wait." Jace stops and stands still, as if he's listening for something.
"Something's off. Come on Elle!" He holds my hand and runs. I try to keep pace with him but me being the most graceful person ever I trip. You'd think after two years I'd have developed a sense of looking out for rocks in the way, but no, I still have to suffer their wrath.
The bad thing is Jace keeps running and leaves me behind. I groan and try to stand up.
"Did you not just see me fall back there?" I complain as I enter the mansion. "You need to sharpen your senses! For a werewolf you're so--" I stop my rant when I see the main people in a huddle.
They're oblivious to my rant, as no heads turn in my direction. Whatever they may be talking about must be very important.
"Hey! What's up?" I join their little meeting and they shut up.
"What?" I ask.
"Sources claim they saw a rogue hanging just outside our perimeter," Leo, the third-in-command ignores me and continues on with his report.
"Guys!" The discussion abruptly stops when we see Hunter running down the hall. "You all gotta see this." We follow him and we go to the control room.
"Check this out." He gestures to the television and zooms in on the edge of their territory.
"Whoa! What is that?" A woman, I think her name's Reena, points to a figure running in the trees.
"Definitely not one of us," Travis scratches his chin in concentration.
"Well let's get a move on! Nothing's gonna happen if we stand here staring at it! Come on!" I hurriedly walk out and head outside. I hear their heavy footfalls and murmurs behind me, and I know they're following me. They never really believed in me, so that's a good start.
I stop when I reach the treeline. They stop too, looking confused. "Listen," I say. They shut up and listen intently. At first we hear nothing. Then we hear faint rustling sounds, growing louder by the second. The snapping of twigs.
"The alarms!" Travis shouts out and we scramble to run.
