Travis leads the way to a room deep in the mansion. He says we're going to the control room. We get through about six hallways when my head starts to spin.
I stop and face Hunter as he was behind me. I exclaim "Piggyback!" and hopped on his back. He makes an oomph sound and I hold on around his neck.
"Elle? What are you doing?" he asks, as if it wasn't obvious.
"Duhh, making you give me a piggyback ride! Now giddy up!"
"What? No!"
I kick him with my un-injured foot and pull on his blonde hair.
"Ow!" he protests. He tries to make me get off his back but I grip his hair tightly.
I tut and wag my finger. "Looks like somebody's not keeping his word to whomever he owes."
"What?" Will asks.
"I told her I owe you so I had to babysit her," he sighs.
"She's right Hunter, you do owe me." Will smirks and Hunter groans.
"Less talk, more horsey!" I tug his hair again and he starts to walk dejectedly.
"Faster!" I tug on his hair again and he starts to jog.
"Faster!" He breaks into a run.
"More!" I yell and he sprints.
In less than a minute we're at the room where Travis was supposed to take us. I have no idea why we got here so fast. It's probably near.
But it's not. We wait for ten minutes until we see Travis and Will at the end of the hall.
"Hurry up, grandpas," Hunter sneers and I laugh.
"Shut up horsey," Travis replies and Hunter sighs.
I look at Hunter and see that he's still not panting. If I had to carry a backpack and run for a mile I'd be having trouble breathing.
But nooo, he's Superman, with superpowers that make him immune to any form of exhaustion no matter how mild.
Travis approaches the door and dials on a keypad that I didn't notice before. The door swings open.
When we enter the spacious room I hear beeping sounds. Like a hundred heart machines beeping at different rates. But that's not what amazed me.
There's a huge, and I mean huge, flatscreen T.V. and a dozen more smaller ones. They are each showing a different diagram and map unlike in appliance stores when all the televisions are showing the same shows and stuff.
On the other side of the room to my left, are keyboards. Some QWERTY ones and some the old-fashioned way. There's even a typewriter in the corner! Some buttons on the keyboards are blinking, some are alight.
On the other side of the room to my right, is a table with many chairs surrounding it. The table is kinda like tha long table you see in the White House and the like. The kind that you have to yell for the person on the other side to hear you.
In the middle of the room there is a sculpture of a... dog? What is up with their obsession of canines here?
"Yo! What up with the mutt?" I call to Will.
Travis growls but Will puts his hand on his chest. He calms down but I see his fists are clenched.
"Elle, we're not normal," Will starts.
"Care to specify?" I cross my arms and leaned against the table.
"That sculpture there, it's my uh, father."
"Obama's my father, want to meet him?"
They can't seriously expect me to believe that? I'm not a kid anymore who believes that there's a monster underneath my bed and is afraid of the dark! Okay, maybe I am afraid of the dark but that's not the point!
"We're serious Elle. Want us to show you?" Travis speaks up, his voice rigid.
"I dare you." I cross my arms.
~•~
"Ready?" Hunter steps away from me.
"I was born ready," I say.
He growls and his eyes turn black again. I take a step back. He starts to grow hair on his body. He glows and I hear a snapping and crunching sound. I gasp.
What stands in front of me now is a wolf.
"Believe us now?" Travis teases and Hunter laughs. Or what I think is a laugh. It's a cross between gagging and whining.
"Okay, I want all of you to clear out, right now." They oblige and even Hunter follows.
I need some time to myself. What just happened back there? Seriously, did Hunter just turn into that... thing? I know for one thing it's a wolf, no dog could be that big. Suddenly everything clicks into place.
The paintings and the figurines of dogs on the walls, they're all wolves! That explains everything, even Hunter's temper and such!
After my head has cleared I step out of the room to see them waiting for me. Hunter's human again and I inch away from him, after that little scene I never want to get on his bad side. Or just by his side.
"Well?" He impatiently says.
With that, I scream.
